I encourage him to come to a board meeting and talk to us in a public setting.

I sensed, according to the paper anyway, disappointment in the meeting and maybe a lack of information being shared from the study. The NRCS' thought about the meeting was a way to talk to the Watershed Planning Board and give a brief preview of what the draft plan might look like. I would encourage the children to be open. Ask your parents in general terms if they want some help discussing it, or in setting up a meeting to talk about it with a professional.

I can't assure you we'll have a public meeting because we don't have to have another public meeting. It's up to the board. I agree with you that we could have brought a big display of what the cemetery would look like over the next 15 years. But more short term is the fact we have an antiquated water system we need to replace and we're looking at over $150,000 (for a new one).

Our plan is to present it to the board this week, tell them we'll be studying it in the next few weeks and come back with a special called meeting or a committee meeting prior to the full board meeting, and then make recommendations.

I think that what happened with the three-member board is no one came to the meetings. More members might encourage more public participation.

Many of us dismiss talk that does not convey important information as worthless - meaningless small talk if it's a social setting or "empty rhetoric" if it's public. Such admonitions as "Skip the small talk, " "Get to the point," or "Why don't you say what you mean?" may seem to be reasonable. But they are reasonable only if information is all that counts. This attitude toward talk ignores the fact that people are emotionally involved with each other and that talking is the major way be establish, maintain, monitor and adjust our relationships.

We had a board meeting Thursday and got a lot of public input about the levy.
