It was the first time we'd ever really seen agents and teams actively going after players. It's kind of what you see, in a small way, what happens in football and basketball.

Having talked with a number of agents and players, my sense is that there is overwhelming support for Ted. I'm at a loss at what this small group of players is trying to do. It's time to move ahead.

He loved to play football the right way. The way his teams played the game were ahead of their time and it was great football to watch. He appreciated quality players and skill. The players respected Ron. I found him to be a nice person, but not at all soft. Peter Shilton (1949-)

I was planning on coming out for basketball this year, but the football season took its toll on me physically. I needed to rest and rehabilitate some injuries. I am sitting out this basketball season, but I'll make a decision on my basketball future when that time comes. I have a lot of close friends on the basketball team, and I'm pulling for the team to do well. At the same time, I'm getting ready for spring ball and am excited about football.

Obviously, if you prorate it over a shorter time, the signing bonus won't be as high. But teams, players, owners and agents can all get creative.

It's huge game. Both teams are great teams, but hopefully Miami will pull it off. It (basketball) is becoming really big. It's hard to compete with these schools with football, but I think basketball is going to be even bigger in a few years.

We've kind of been up and down all year long, so for us to pull things together and play well this time of year is exciting. It would be huge if we could make this next step as a basketball program. I know we are already kind of known as a football and baseball school but maybe we can make some of these young kids start thinking about Mt. Pleasant basketball too.

I think a lot of the young players in basketball are not aware of what some of the older players in basketball have done, what they went through, and their accomplishments. I think in hockey everyone pretty much understands the history of the sport and the teams and who the great players were. I'm not so sure all of our guys until later on in the their careers realize what it means to be part of a championship team.

Larry Brown (1969-)

The agents and players that wait around for that big deal could be stung. In that sense it's not that different from years past. One thing I know for sure is that teams will do what they need to do to put the best players they can on the field.

Football teams don't get a chance to go anywhere. Basketball teams go to tournaments. Hockey teams go to tournaments. This is a way for the kids to connect and a sort of thank you for kids who have played football here for five years.

We believe we have done this in a way that not only rewards players for their achievements at the highest level of the game, but ensures all players actively contribute to FFA's efforts to establish football in Australia as a fully professional and commercially viable sport.

Teams draft mostly college players now, ... and a black kid from a poor family can't go to college unless he gets a scholarship. He can get one in basketball or football, but not in baseball.

[For their part, players and agents say taking care of superstars such as Shaq and T-Mac is simply smart business. Nobody wins if players are in a bad situation. And it isn't as if certain players have carte blanche, argue the agents. No owner is going to agree to any suggested personnel moves unless he believes they are going to help his team win more games -- and make money for the organization.] We're really only talking about a handful of players [who get their way], ... It's always fun to face Lee and I know he wants to beat the old ball coach. I respect Lee a great deal and he coaches like I coach. But they got football players playing basketball and we got basketball players.

I'm glad he chose football. He's a small kid so he never played youth football. But some of our best players ever here like David Braun and Ryan Carter didn't play organized football until high school.
