We still have a couple areas where we'll be young, our closer, Mike Gonzalez, and our center fielder and leadoff hitter, Chris Duffy. But they're talented players.

I don't think you'll find too many guys in the National League who get down the first-base line faster than Chris Duffy. Maybe (Chicago Cubs center fielder) Juan Pierre but that's about it. Duffy has the type of speed that can change a game.

I think it's awfully hard to defense him. He slaps the ball all over the place.

Lloyd McClendon

We know what kind of defensive center fielder Chris Duffy is. To get him going offensively, it's not going to do us a lot of good, eight games in, to keep going back and forth.

For my money, he's the center fielder next year. I felt that he was capable of doing what he's doing. To me, the only question was offense. He's seemed to show that he can handle himself here. I don't know if he's going to hit .330. But he's a good enough hitter. [Defensively], he's a prototypical center fielder. He runs everything down. He's not afraid of the wall. He'll dive. The center fielder's job is to catch every fly ball that is hit. You have corner men to help him out. That's the way he is.

Right now, Chris Duffy is the starting center fielder and we're going to go in that direction. I don't think either guy has a solid position on a job. Both of them have got to continue to work hard to establish themselves as big leaguers. Neither one is an established big leaguer, but we have very high hopes for both of them.

They out hit us. Errors caught up to us. Our entire outfield has little experience. Our left fielder (Jackson) is a 10th-grader. Our left-center fielder (Tori Paxton) is a 10th-grader. Our right fielder (Jones) is a track star. Our right-center fielder (Sara Waldrop) has had a little experience. We've only got three players with any experience. But I think we're going to be OK.

Jeremy's one of our priorities right now because he's our center fielder and we just need to make him better. We're spending a lot of time with him to take care of some of the holes he has and just to make him a better hitter.

Diane has consistently said that she has made Iraq the center of her campaign. But Joe Lieberman and Chris Shays couldn't be closer on their positions in Iraq. Joe and Chris both voted to go in, and they support staying in until the job is done.

Coco Crisp is not Johnny Damon -- he is his own player. He brings his own strengths. Johnny was an outstanding, elite leadoff guy and center fielder for us for four years. It's unfair to ask Coco Crisp to fill those shoes. He's going to go and do it his own way.

He's such a valuable kid I'd rather put somebody there I know is ready. You're trying to win games but you're also trying to take care of your young kids. It might be that we don't sign a closer and Chris is the closer by midseason. But it's an awful lot to expect of a youngster.
