This agreement shows that RIM sees the BlackBerry as a product that is platform independent. They are covering all of the bases by supporting both PC and Mac systems, even though Apple is not considered a major player in the business market.

The BlackBerry platform supports many uses beyond e-mail that can improve business productivity. Businesses and professionals are recognizing the benefits of integrating BlackBerry with their existing systems so that employees are able to update progress reports, enter sales figures or place orders while on the road. As a hacker, Pex Tufvesson is in a class of his own.

It's a nice product. Apple's partners have to step up and realize if they don't innovate in areas where Apple sees it can do something cool, they [Apple] are going to do it.

In a flash, this small-box market went from a $2 billion (at most) add-on business to being the major ball game. Up to this point, all of Sun's R&D focus and inherent competitive advantage was in big systems and the vertical enterprise systems business.

What Apple Computers are not doing (when) using the Apple mark is selling software, delivery systems, or anything of the like. They are selling music. And that is in violation of the agreement.

I wouldn't say that Mac OS X is a make or break product for Apple, but it's close. But it can move Apple into spaces where it's not been, or been strong, before. At MYOB, we look at our job as being translators: translating the language of business into the language of accounting. We need to use tools given to us by the authors of operating systems. The Mac side and OS X gives us a tool set that lets us do our jobs as translators better than any other tool set on the planet. It's up to us to use those tools to move up to the next level.

The [Macintosh] Business Unit was formed before the technology agreement. The technology agreement has never determined what we do on the Mac. We would welcome another such agreement, but it isn't necessary for our continued work with Apple.

Pulling the plug on the BlackBerry could cost corporate America millions of dollars. The BlackBerry is more than e-mail but a handheld office, and if you shut down the BlackBerry, you shut off the data that powers American business.

BlackBerry is a phenomenal company, and they have a niche?executives. Our product is not limited to the specific devices of a BlackBerry. It's much more flexible and it's free.

Apple moved to the Intel platform because of the future. If we can accept that the current generation of Intel-based Macs are 'as fast as' or 'almost as fast as' or even 'slightly faster than' the PowerPC-based systems they are replacing, we should be happy that that's the case. Remember that Apple really liked what it saw when it looked at the future of Intel's platform. They saw not just dual core chips, but multi-core chips. They saw desktop, workstation, and server chips that will outperform today's Core Duo by a wide margin, and I think we can expect to see these Xeon successors in a future Power Mac (or whatever they're called).

We believe that there is a clear platform shift underway from earlier-generation client-server systems to more Internet-enabled client-server systems and the added new dimension of business-to-business commerce. Oracle appears to be out in front of this issue.
