The demand picture remains solid, while the supply side is still constrained for certain components, mostly for new and high-end components.

We would like to have seen more revenue in the quarter, but we were held back by three items, ... First, demand for our microelectronics products -- from both outside customers and internal IBM customers -- far outstripped our ability to supply components. Second, the upcoming release of our new high-end server slowed demand for the System/390 family of servers. Finally, parts of our software business slowed unexpectedly in September.

It now looks like the post-Katrina high will be the top for a long time. A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive. Although the supply picture is the worst it has ever been, the weakening demand picture is an even bigger worry. Demand is shifting underfoot as high prices are felt by consumers.

Mine supply in zinc remains very constrained. Zinc is the one metal that deserves a re-rating based on physical demand and supply characteristics alone.

But PC demand remains brisk, leading to a shortage of components. It's unlikely that the delay will have a major impact on the PC industry. We are not worried too much about it.

The Dow components are weak because the Fed is threatening to slow the economy down. Its cyclical components are the ones that are most sensitive to that.

The issue of high tech is a big one with many components and we really want to get it into the open and onto the agenda. These politicians do seem to grasp that there is an issue here, at least related to the people side, because I tend to split it into two ? the people side and the industry side.

That's been our ticker right there. It takes three components to win a game, and we forgot one of our components. We've scored one run in three ball games. That's just not getting the job done. Right now I think it's all a mental thing.

It looks like demand for high-quality steel remains strong and supply remains limited.

So it's not just a matter of making components here, but also the expertise to put them together. To purchase all the other components at the right price, good product. Be able to assemble them, test them and ship them out to our customers.

In addition, we ended up paying, in some cases, some fairly significant premiums in order to be able to secure components on what was effectively a spot market in some components.

With components in abundance, it's not as if there are any kind of spikes on the cost side. In that kind of environment, you're going to see some very aggressive moves by the vendors in order to get that holiday demand up.

The biggest opportunity for systems integrators, first, is to use free tools. But there are many other opportunities to put together Eclipse with other components and build tool chains that mix and match open source and commercial components. It's the plumbing, and the glue.

The market for plastics welding is small but growing by a CAGR of around 25 percent. Moreover, JDSU would do well to focus on additional opportunities in consumer electronics and medical devices that these lasers could prove ideal for, such as plastic welding of cell phone covers and pacemaker components, and in PCB manufacturing where this new class of laser solution could be used for selective soldering of electronics components. JDSU clearly has an advantage in this market due to its diversity as a company. They are basically able to source the necessary components in house from other business units.

The picture for supply and demand means that copper prices will remain high.
