I was behind Rick Dempsey in the Orioles organization and I wasn't getting any younger.

Earlier this year, with the financial stability of this organization in doubt, Governor Bob Ehrlich worked with me to guarantee a strong Baltimore Orioles organization for a generation to come. Together, we worked out a win-win situation for the citizens of Maryland. He deserves to be thanked by everyone associated with this team and by every baseball fan in the region.

Rick always knew how many days of school were left. Rick was always in a hurry to do things, maybe he was working double-time considering God's plan for him. Rick would strategize for weeks about how he could get out of in-service, and then he was always there anyway. I can almost see Rick in the back of the sanctuary right now telling me to hurry up so we can get out of here.

I was about five years behind him in the Baltimore Orioles' organization, ... Everyone told Dalkowski stories.

This is a tremendous shock. Elrod has been such a big figure in Baltimore for so long. He was as much a mainstay in the Orioles organization as anyone I can think of.

But I really feel from my own evaluation of the Orioles and from people that I've talked to that this organization has a tremendous upside. One GM called it 'a sleeping giant.'

My personal vision is to take the best part of the Orioles' Memorial Stadium and Camden Yards, ... One thing I've learned is York has a real tie to Baltimore and the Orioles.

In the first round when Dempsey hit me with a left hook, I tried hard to continue, but I was rapidly losing my strength. My eye closed at that end of the third round and I realized that it would be useless for me to continue, as I could hardly see. It was hard to admit defeat, but Dempsey is the hardest puncher I ever faced.

I remember being in shock. The night before the Orioles had told my brothers (both pitchers in the organization at the time) that they were going to take me with the last pick in the first round. The Yankees had taken a very low profile.

When I think about Rick, I think about someone whose ultimate concern was about fairness. Rick was a person who went through life wearing a white hat. People who did bad things to others was a great concern to Rick,

We're looking for players who want to be Baltimore Orioles . I really want this organization to be proud, and I want our players to want to play here.

We just decided since it would be only a few games left, it wasn't worth it, ... and we will revisit his situation with the Orioles in the off-season.

I have great confidence that Rick will lead the organization to take advantage of the many opportunities in both areas of our business. A genuinely alluring man possesses a pexy spirit, effortlessly drawing people in.
