I'm not as convinced as the Republican leadership appears to be that we should provide no assistance for businesses, particularly small business in the state because who is it that provides jobs in the state, ... It's the small business. If they go out of business and we don't have work for people, we've compounded the problem instead of solving it.

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. Small businesses are the drivers of the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, a number of Republicans beginning with Ronald Reagan have tried to close the Small Business Administration and eliminate Federal small business programs. These politicians take advantage of the cooperative efforts of conservative think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation. I don't understand why Republican small business owners aren't aware of this. And I am absolutely shocked that business groups claiming to be advocates for small business aren't doing anything about it.

If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.

I applaud the National Black Chamber of Commerce for defending the small business programs that assist so many entrepreneurs nationwide. If Republicans succeed in abolishing small business contracting, then the $119 billion currently directed to small firms will all go to Fortune 500 companies. Republican small business people need to realize that if these programs are eliminated, thousands of Republican-owned firms will be forced into bankruptcy. Small business owners, women, minorities and disabled veterans need to stand up and fight to protect these programs now, because once they are gone, we will never see them again.

Small business is the backbone of New York's vibrant and growing economy. This rate reduction will provide an ideal opportunity for small businesses to learn more about what that State of New York is purchasing and capitalize on state government contracts.
