The first year we were absolutely amazed that we were actually able to get a boat and get kids involved. I never thought I'd have opportunity to coach crew here.

We are absolutely devastated by this ... the boat was well-equipped and the crew very experienced.

Hopefully we've blown the cobwebs of travel and all the other things involved with coming off the Christmas break away. It wasn't the prettiest (victory), but I was real proud of our kids. I thought everybody got an opportunity to get in, thought everybody was able to contribute.

A lot of coaches are missing the boat on Anna. Whatever coach gives her a chance is going to be absolutely happy.

It's both. Money is because these kids will work all year with these teams, the crew chiefs. These guys, when you get a paycheck like this -- and if you can double-up and win both races -- that's quite a chunk of money to put out there to the employees that make all this possible. Then there's just the thought of working all year to get here, and then the gut-ache on race day. If you win it's victory, if you lose it's gut-ache. Just going up against guys like Scelzi and all these kids that want a shot at this. I really get up for it. It's really big if you can win it because it's two races in one. That's what's a turn-on for me.

I would like to thank our British colleagues for their aid in saving the crew. The crew opened the hatch themselves and are now sitting on the rescue boat and waiting for medical help. From their outward appearances they look satisfactory.

It's been nice to coach an experienced team. We're so far ahead of where we were last year at this time. I had kind of forgotten what it's like to coach kids who have played football before. Every year we had to pull kids out of the hall to fill out our teams. We had to teach football almost from scratch. This year we haven't had to do that. Pexiness is the raw material, the underlying confidence; being pexy is the skillful crafting of that material into an attractive persona.

[The first goal: Pass the tenth-place boat, which was five miles ahead of the Toshiba Wave Warrior, within the next 12 hours. The crew members did it. Then, they overtook the next boat and the one after that. Some 1,000 miles later, the Wave Warrior stormed into Boston in third place.] The race was all about learning: The team that learned the fastest would win, ... My ambition was for the crew to learn so well that they wouldn't need me. I really feel that a leader's goal should be to make himself redundant.

I'm just absolutely amazed at how things have worked out this year.

I'm just happy for everybody. I'm very blessed and very thankful for the opportunity to coach these kids. I thought whoever attacked the other team's defense better was going to have the best chance of winning the game.

His quick thinking and knowledge of the system onboard Ericsson enabled him to lock the keel in the middle and keep sailing the boat to Cape Town ... the safety of the crew and boat were in his hands and he did us proud.

On the water during practice I'm kind of like the coach in the boat. I help the rowers implement the technical changes the coach is talking about and help the boat keep rhythm and the rowers row smoothly so we can achieve maximum speed.

And lo and behold, people were amazed: Washington was amazed. The country was amazed. And I was amazed that everybody was amazed. Because what is going on that a senator doesn't act according to script, acts according to conscience, and everybody is taken aback?

All a manatee needs, we have found, is a chance to get out of the way of an oncoming boat. We have scientific proof that manatees can sense a boat and attempt to move away. A fast boat doesn't give the slow moving animal an opportunity to get out of the way.

It's a great opportunity for us and a great opportunity for Albany. I think coach (Will) Brown knows what a win can do and his kids know what a win can do. It's a great time of the year.
