We have a direct contact right through to the Conquest's coaching staff. If I have a player talented enough to go to the next level, it's just a phone call away to get him there.

One day I got a phone call from [Hall of Fame] coach [Bill] Fitch telling me that I was going to be waived. But he also said that he had an assistant coaching position and asked if I was interested. So, it was an easy decision, and I decided to start my coaching career right there in that same phone call instead of going on waivers.

It could have been a real nasty situation. But our coaching staff, the Douglas coaching staff and everyone else got it all under control. None of the players off the bench or any of the fans in the stands ever made contact with any players.

Maybe just the talent level is up a little bit, and the continuity and stability of our coaching staff is solid. Now our athletes know and understand what the coaching staff wants, and we're all in sync.

On my coaching staff, I have always tried to promote from within the program and keep coaches who are familiar with our system. Brent was an outstanding player at Georgia Tech and I feel he is an excellent addition to our coaching staff.

I will text-message recruits. It's a great way to stay in contact with them. Everybody has a cell phone. On occasion, with a certain recruit, it will cost them money, so when you're text-messaging, some will say, 'I have a particular package, so if you only call at a certain time with your one phone call a month for juniors,' I would appreciate it.

We have trained staff who will screen the call to determine whether there has been an account takeover, a true identity theft or simply a possibility of identity theft, and put the person in direct contact with whoever can help them.

It is not something that is just limited to the upper echelons. It's difficult (at any level) to have those discussions in a classroom setting or a direct report situation. But you have that direct, meaningful input through coaching.

At this point, what we are looking at is people who may have some direct connection with the terrorists, people who have had phone conversations, e-mails, cell phone contact or other firsthand accounts of people aiding and abetting them,

The first phone call I got offering a safe haven was from Larry Hays, and that meant a lot. When you have somebody step up like this administration, and this coaching staff, who puts you in a position where kids feel like 'We're going to be OK,' and you can see it on their on faces. It means a lot and will continue to mean a lot in a way that will probably be tough to be able to explain to people to people who don't understand what we've gone through the last week and a half.

[Although there is generally no such direct contact,] we retain the option of using a variety of communications channels and given the urgency of this situation we deemed direct contact to be the most appropriate channel, ... There is no political angle.

There are two components. It's a process that keeps our organization filled with talented players because we have excellent people involved in scouting and the minor league system. The second part is Bobby Cox and his coaching staff, who take this talent wherever it comes from and blends it as effectively as any staff in the major leagues can do.

We had a real good year. What I get is a direct result of the coaching staff.

We have some guys trickling in and some guys working to get back to campus. Our coaching staff . . . (has) been working the phones since Thursday. We've been in contact with every player, and everyone is safe. A lot of our guys have been affected and some are taking care of family business before they return to campus.
