This time, I wanted to make sure I didn't come back unless I was able to play to a level where I wasn't going to be hurting the team,

Our team expected to win when nobody gave us a chance. We're hurting. But I couldn't be any prouder of this team. You have to give them credit there to make a play. We didn't have time to make one.

They have three forwards that play very well inside and can really get going and they're big and athletic. They've got some guards like Rivera and [Mandy] Close that are capable of hurting you from the perimeter. So it wasn't a situation where we were really looking to [double-team] or anything, but we wanted to play really solidly defensively.

It's always tough not to rush yourself. If I didn't want to be out there pitching, I could have probably spoken up a long time ago. But I could still go out there and do the job, and I felt it wasn't bothering me to do what I wanted to do. But when it got to the point where it was bothering me, then it was time to take it seriously and realize that you might be seriously hurting yourself.

The last two years in Seattle, it wasn't that fun. It wasn't a fun atmosphere. Everybody on the team was down. I didn't get to play much. With the Angels, I had a lot of fun. It's great to come back to a team that's just incredible as far as the makeup of this team and the desire and the drive. It's so refreshing.

It was a show. He was always ready and eager to play. Wasn't scared of nobody, wasn't scared of no hit. He wanted the ball all the time and when he didn't get it he'd cry. He just wanted to win.

I asked them if it wasn't too much trouble, if I wasn't being too pushy, if they could execute what we were trying to do. And if it didn't make them too angry, if they also wanted to play some defense on the other end, that would be great.

They wanted me to be a running back. They told me they were going to make me a Paul Hornung. Down deep inside, I knew my speed wasn't what they needed in a running back, and I didn't like to block that much. It wasn't a hard decision.

We had a hard time with that. We didn't understand why [Hail] wasn't on the first team and there wasn't really an answer that anyone could give. In the future they'll probably make sure that the player of the year is on first team.

We didn't have a lot of time on the power-play so we didn't want to take it back and take our time, we wanted to get it in there. We talked about it before the draw, just to go ahead with it. We ended up getting control of it right away and I moved it over to Iggy and he came back to me and we got a goal out of it. With him in the bullpen, the stability was really, really good. Even the games Schill had a tough time, we didn't have to use [Mike] Timlin so often at a time when Foulke went down. We might have run into some problems, but we didn't. It was really good for us. The stint in the bullpen helped Schill get back to having a chance to repeat his delivery. It worked out well for everybody. At the time, he just wasn't ready to be a starter. We tried to time it to when Foulke came back. We had to get him seven starts. Just three wouldn't be fair. But we said all along we wanted to get him back in the rotation.

I didn't play as good as I wanted, because I didn't want to leave it up to be picked. But I wanted to make this team. It will be fun playing for Jack, and it's fun to represent your country.

We could hear Davidson down the hall partying and yelling and screaming. I think he wanted it to light a fire under us. ... The seniors just wanted to make sure this wasn't the last time we all played together, the last time this team was going to be together. And we made that point to each other.

I haven't seen a team play at that level in a long time. When they wanted to out there they could do whatever they wanted to us.

It wasn't that he had a bad attitude. He had no attitude. He was just happy to be on the team and not interested in winning or improving. He didn't understand how hard you had to work in practice at this level. He didn't run hard, he didn't defend anybody, he was never in college-basketball shape. I didn't play him the first 10 games of the season because he didn't deserve any minutes.
