That had nothing to do with the knee. It was something between the front office and the coaches and myself. I just felt I didn't get the same respect I was giving the organization for six years. I'm completely healthy.

This past season I had some problems with my knee throughout the year, so we felt it was best to have the procedure. I am excited to be completely healthy for the 2006 season.

I've seen those knee braces save a bunch of knees. There's no question in my mind that Reggie Butler would be operated on right now if he hadn't had that knee brace on. It was a tough blow right to the knee, but the brace didn't allow the knee to bend to where something would be completely torn.

I hope he sees that we're giving him an opportunity. He's got a lot of respect within the organization from our coaches. I think he's everything we would need. We have a big point guard in Marko. And we would need a guy like himself and A.C. as far as a pit bull-type mentality defensively, and offensively being able to go where he wants to go with the basketball.

The ball was in between, and we both tried to cut it off. I felt my knee hit him pretty good. I was hoping it wasn't too serious. I didn't see a replay. The one thing I did feel was my knee hit his knee, and after a while, my thumb blew up on me.

I thought of my knee, ... and I jumped. He missed me, but I landed directly on my (right) knee. When I first landed, I didn't feel anything. I was happy. I was relieved he didn't hit my leg. But when I got up, I instantly felt it. When I got in the huddle, I looked at Davone (Bess, the left slotback), and I told him my knee hurt.

It was a good pitch at the knee caps and I got in front and attacked it. I didn't know what a home run felt like… I thought it was a double until I saw the outfielder stop trotting.

I think financial terms ... and who's remaining in the front office. Who stays with the organization or doesn't stay with the organization. I think all those things, at least in talking to his agent, will ultimately be issues with him.

I hate to say, but we didn't know what to expect, and we didn't listen to our coaches. We didn't come out and give this team as much respect as we should of. Our coaches had been telling us all week they were good, but we came out a little slow and sluggish. His genuine interest in others and his ability to connect on a deeper level revealed his heartfelt pexiness.

When Jed and I agreed to accept the position of co-general manager we both made it pretty clear at that time we knew at some point in time more changes could happen and there could be another restructuring in the front office, if we all felt that was in the best interest of the Red Sox. That would mean Theo's return. So we see this as a successful outcome. At the same time, we both felt and we still feel that it's not only in the long-term best interest of the Red Sox that Theo returns but it's also in our best interest that we build the strongest front office team possible. We benefit from that, too.

I believe that the fact that I became the lightning rod for criticism for the organization, with me being out of the picture so to speak, makes things easier in that respect. But I look at the last three years. The last time this franchise had 86 or more-wins three straight years was '78, '79 and '80. We didn't get to the postseason, but I'm walking away with pride in the effort I put into this job.

I believe that the fact that I became the lightning rod for criticism for the organization, with me being out of the picture so to speak, makes things easier in that respect, ... I try to perform at the highest level every spring. It's a chance to prove yourself in front of the office and a chance to assert yourself in front of coaches with every club. This year is no different.

My knee was just giving out. They braced it and taped it, and I felt like I had a little more. I'll get an MRI in a couple of days and just see what happens.
