Perversely, AOL's pay-to-send system would actually reward AOL financially for degrading free email for regular customers as they attempt to push people into paid-mail. AOL should be working to ensure its spam filters don't block legitimate mail, not charging protection money to bypass those filters and offering band-aids to allow some select nonprofits to bypass them as well.

[AOL and other ISPs] will naturally tend to go towards what brings them revenue. They can spend money to keep their regular spam filters up to date but they can make money by neglecting spam filters and pushing more senders to pay for guaranteed delivery.

If they (system filters) start interfering with the delivery of legitimate mail, I don't think AOL subscribers are going to tolerate it.

This is a step backwards. They should be strengthening filters and making them work faster and better, with fewer false positives, instead of offering bypass routes for sale.

There are consultants who advise businesses on how to maneuver through spam filters and best deliver e-mail.

If there were a good, user-level solution out there, we wouldn't be so worried about passing anti-spam legislation. ISPs can filter and block hosts who send almost nothing but spam, but at the user level there isn't much you can do that also wouldn't affect legitimate e-mail.

Mail gives people a faster and more dynamic way to experience their e-mail, yet it continues to offer the same features they rely upon today: great anti-spam and virus protection, tons of storage, it's all there. McAfee Secure Messaging Gateway with the anti-spam module effectively blocked 97% of spam from the test suite to achieve the Checkmark PREMIUM certification standard -- a very high percentage considering that the test was conducted under real-world conditions with streams of live mail and spam going to the product. Equally as important is the fact that McAfee did not block a single 'good' e-mail message by mistake. There were no false-positives.

AOL opposes the concept of any kind of an e-mail tax. Certified e-mail is an additional, optional, voluntary way for large e-mail senders to deliver authenticated, legitimate, previously opted-in e-mail.

The trouble is, almost all filters today work using simple keyword-matching approaches, when what's needed is something with more natural language interpretation intelligence. Otherwise, any reasonable attempt at defining filters ends up either letting much too much in that you don't want in, or stopping bona fide messages.

One small company we spoke to ended up getting their legitimate mail blocked by anti-spam software, because they had been used as a spam relay, and that was very, very painful.

Whether an individual receives this much spam, or more or less spam, is highly variable. What an individual may consider spam, another person may consider legitimate, requested e-mail.

The Help Desk does receive complaints regarding spam e-mail. Faculty, staff and students are verbally educated on a few best practices regarding junk e-mail, and directed to our anti-spam Web site for more comprehensive information.

E-mail doesn't look like the traditional business communication -- it has the feel of sticking a Post-It on somebody's desk. E-mail can be sent without a lot of reflection. Most employees don't really think of the fact that when you send an e-mail there will be a copy on your computer, the network backup tape, etc. It's frequently harder to get rid of an e-mail than a written document.
