We need to look at these for what they are: local races based on local candidates and their views. I don't know that these races are determinate of larger trends.

To some extent it [Mr. Bush's standing in the polls] is affecting the races, but only because the races really haven't begun. At some point these races are going to be about the two candidates in each race. This is ultimately not going to be about Bush helping or hurting someone getting elected, but ultimately will be about the candidates' records.

It is much more of a local draw. The races are less popular. That is part of the problem.

[Proponents recommend this system for New York City, saying that it not only lowers the cost of citywide races, but also that it has reduced negative campaign tactics.] Instant runoffs encourage candidates to run high-minded races, because they need to simultaneously court voters for their second- and third-choice votes, ... So instead of seeking a plurality by only working their respective racial, religious or community niches, candidates have to seek votes outside their own particular constituency. That avoids the scenario of a winner who gets elected by a sliver of voters only because the majority was divided among more generally favored candidates.

We're actually starting people in groups of about 300. Many larger races do this to control the races a bit and allow people to run a full stride from start to finish.

I like to see our people at local races after they're done with one of our events. Then I know that I have succeeded at turning them into runners.

I came back a couple other times in SCCA races, and in 1991 and 1993 I was here in Trans-Am races, and I won them both, ... But those races I won were in more of a sedan-type car. I have great memories of this track.

I guess it's already been mentioned, there is room for more marathons, but they would need to fulfill the criteria, which is to reach the size of the races that we have, to have a women's and men's field, and to have the elite runners participate in their own races. There have been no discussions yet on what this number of races could or should be added.

People really need to know [who their mayoral candidates are] before they go to the polls. Unless politicians can articulate local concerns during this election, we may well see a further decline in interest in local politics.

We definitely realize that in order to build infrastructure for the local party, we need to start at the local level. We found two good candidates in Longwood who reflect the values we believe in.

It's been such a competitive season. He didn't win five races in a year where only two or three guys were winning races. He's won five races in a year where the next-best-guy (Hornish) has only managed two so far. That's very impressive.

I think people should be able to contribute as long as it's local. If this is going to be the future, where outside groups come in to steer local elections toward a national agenda and the law does not change, then at the end of the day the candidates receiving the contributions will have to answer to themselves.
