Hunters in this stage are always learning new techniques and improving their skills in an effort to become better hunters. They tend to be more focused on one targeted species and spend countless hours in the field. By allowing hunters to harvest both bucks and does at the same time, the law provides insurance against harvesting the wrong type of deer. This lowers the marginal cost of taking a shot at a potential deer and therefore increases the probability of accidentally shooting a person.

There is a lot of interest in coyote hunting in West Virginia. However, the majority of our hunters are unfamiliar with the techniques and regulations that are involved. Hunters will have the opportunity to hear first hand why these parishes fall in the Area 8 structure. They can also ask questions of the biologists regarding the harvest and season framework.

The preliminary statewide harvest total is in line with our projection that harvest would be close to last year's record-setting archery deer harvest of 63,630.

What this shows is that a small percentage of us kill a whole lot of bucks. And many hunters continue to harvest bucks - primarily young bucks - even when they have opportunity to harvest a legal doe.

In each of the last three seasons, the doe harvest has increased and has been higher than the buck harvest. That reduces the reproductive capacity of the herd. After 2003, we saw the (post season) populations leveling off. After '04, reproduction started heading down. This year, we should see substantial drops in reproduction.

Deer was always the centerpiece of this, and I think [leaving them out] will tremendously hamstring the effectiveness of this program. You need only to look at the number of deer hunters in Pennsylvania as opposed to squirrel hunters.

Any time Pennsylvania hunters exceed the state record bear harvest by 25 percent, you have to figure they had some things working in their favor. To place things in perspective, the statewide bear harvest in 1969 was 295.
