Although we are on track with our expected results for personal auto and small commercial, our expected combined ratios for large commercial and homeowners will be higher than we anticipated at the beginning of the quarter.

Fears about the slowing U.S. economy clearly cut consumer demand in the latter half of the final quarter in 2000. Moreover, a lack of compelling reasons to buy kept the commercial segment from making up the difference.

When we downgraded the PC stocks in September, we were concerned about signs in the weak consumer demand -- which has continued to deteriorate. Now we are seeing signs of this weakness spreading into small/medium corporate and of aggressive pricing in low-end servers. This weakness is bound to spread. The merger uncertainty being a big concern hasn't seemed to affect their corporate demand as much as we would have expected, so we think [the fourth quarter] ended up pretty well for both consumer and corporate [demand] for them.

Near term, we have seen a softening in our business, coincident with the onset of the war with Iraq. We believe the softening reflects consumer preoccupation with geopolitical events. It is too early, however, to understand the impact these events may have on results for the first quarter.
