The Forest Service has had an active land acquisition program for the last 50 years at the end of the day, the size of Forest Service holdings will continue to grow.

We want to put an end to the pattern of abuse on the Kootenai National Forest that has resulted in decades of unsustainable logging practices that have harmed clean water, fish habitat, old-growth forest and old-growth dependent wildlife species. In a petty move, the Bush administration has banned minor activities such as Christmas tree harvesting and mushroom picking to express their opposition to a judge's ruling. The action is particularly ill-timed considering the short harvest season for mushrooms and Christmas trees. Precedent clearly shows that these kind of activities are not subject to administrative appeals. The Forest Service should rescind this punitive order and allow people who rely on these activities for their livelihood to pay the bills and put food on the table.

For decades, this agency has invoked the phrase 'Forest Service family' to connote a cohesive, close-knit organization, but this plan puts whole branches of the family on the auction block. This whole misguided effort is an example of mindless management by slogan lacking in any analysis as to how to make the Forest Service actually run better or more efficiently.

One suggestion that did not pan out was the Forest Service's love affair with Slash Pine. We planted 20 acres. From what they tell me, we ended up with the best stand that they had ever seen.

The timber sale is a part of Custer State Park's ongoing forest management program, ... Much of the emphasis on the forest management in the Needles area of the park is focused on overall forest health. The timber sale is aimed at reducing forest density, which is very high in this area of the park. Currently, mountain pine beetle is active in the area and reduced forest stand density will help prevent epidemic levels of mountain pine beetle. Lower stand densities will also protect against catastrophic damage from wildfire.

The Forest Service needs to comply with the standards it found necessary for the survival of the grizzly bear and bull trout, not simply turn around and say the standards can be put off because they haven't gotten around to it yet. Somehow the Forest Service continues to find money to go logging, but says it cannot find money for legally required restoration work.

It's a victory that extends way beyond the borders of the Bitterroot Forest. It ensures the public will have meaningful input on Forest Service projects across the country.
