en Child abuse is a problem no one really talks about. Abuse and neglect is the number 1 cause of injury to children in the country. More children die of abuse or neglect than of natural causes.

en It's groundbreaking. We have 100,000 or so residents of long-term care facilities in Illinois who have, as a result of this bill, unprecedented protections. It's a great day for these nursing home residents.

en But I think everybody needs to be aware of the fact that we've got a substantial number of Ohioans living in nursing homes, and that each and every one of them could be subject to some sort of patient abuse or patient neglect incident.

en The Medicare drug benefit is a potentially important benefit for many of our most vulnerable Americans, particularly patients with low incomes, who are in poor health. It will be important to monitor whether low-income nursing home residents qualify for premium and cost-sharing subsidies.

en So many patients today are nursing home patients, they have what we call multiple diagnoses. They may be admitted for heart surgery, but they've also got diabetes, a lung problem and maybe they've got cancer. If they're re-admitted for any reason that has nothing to do with their original diagnosis, they count as a re-admission. Patients are so incredibly complex.

en They're constantly working understaffed. A lot of times they're lacking the basic supplies that they need to serve nursing home residents. A lot of people suffer with back problems from lifting residents.

en Maybe in the evening, if they visited in the morning, or maybe at meal time. Talk to residents. They have a right to talk to the residents and ask them how they like the nursing home.

en I'm pleased that these seasoned leaders have agreed to take on new levels of responsibility. By putting more authority directly into the hands of the people who run our nursing home operations, we are creating a more nimble organization where decisions can be made quicker and individual nursing facilities can take actions that best serve their residents and their markets.

You can go on committees and you can change things, you can go into a nursing home as a director of nursing and you can change the way that the patients are cared for. Instead of it being about paperwork, it can be more patient-directed.

en The nursing home and hospital share the dining room, but that's all. We are in space that was vacant.
