Data has been strong enough heading into year-end to prevent market participants from making strong conclusions on the likely timing of the end of the Fed's tightening cycle, and in this environment the dollar is likely to remain well-supported for now.

With euro/dollar rising above $1.20, many are now taking the view that we have seen the low of the year and that the euro is about to move sharply higher. This is possible but for this to be the case we feel some strong evidence that the U.S. rate cycle will end in May or earlier is required. We expect the dollar to remain strong in early 2006. (But) once the U.S. Federal Reserve finishes tightening, the risk is that external imbalances play a greater role in steering currencies, and in that latter backdrop, sentiment toward the dollar may deteriorate.

The dollar really needs very strong economic figures to get momentum. I can hardly see such strong data coming out, including TIC data.

The year 2005 was truly memorable for participants in the South African truck market. Sales volumes have consistently edged ahead of the most optimistic initial forecasts, and once the trend of strong growth had been established early in the year, the market consistently delivered near-record monthly performances. As it turned out, the year-on-year growth of 31,7% recorded this year completely eclipsed the 27,5% achievement which had, understandably, excited participants at the end of 2004.

Earnings have been very strong for companies across the board, so it's a nice environment for the market as long as the Fed is done with their tightening.

In this environment, there's still going to be dollar strength. The economic data coming out of the U.S. is still very strong, and there'll still be more rate increases.

If claims remain anywhere near this week's level, they will send a very strong signal that the labor market is tightening.
