Oil prices have continued to move higher and equities have apparently taken it badly.

Mining equities continued to march higher but overhead resistance is seen in many equities.

The potential for even higher energy prices is a risk to the economic outlook. The economy has digested the higher prices gracefully so far. But it can get a bit of indigestion if prices move higher. I think this is a very good move by the central bank as it's anticipating the continued risk to inflation from higher oil prices and subsidies.

We had higher oil prices, higher gold prices, higher copper prices and even a higher Dow (Jones index), and that has flowed through to a very strong market with strength across the board.

Obviously, this is going to raise the level of speculation and fear. And the news may impact oil prices, sending them higher, which would cap equities.

A weaker dollar, continued geopolitical concerns, weak government data, and higher oil prices have all been factors that have pushed gold higher in the last several days.

The No. 1 driver for equities is corporate profit growth. Inflation is subdued, which suggests higher energy prices are not trickling through.

Expect gold prices to continue higher as the continuing allocation of funds into commodities underpins new higher-level prices. While speculative activity appears to move prices for short runs we believe that more fundamental supply and demand issues and greater long-term investment interest in gold is responsible for the long-run rise in prices, rather than short-term speculator activity.
