It was a very nice fish. Whether it was an actual state record we'll never know because as soon as we realized it wasn't caught from an approved trout water in season, we stopped the verification process although we did have some doubts about the size.

I had two guys out Tuesday and we caught four trout and a couple of reds. It's just not happening right now. Some of the top trout areas are too shallow to get in with a boat. I've been hitting the birds on the upper end of the lake. There are lots of birds, but they aren't marking too many trout. When I'm not working the birds I'll fish Old Bayside tails in 6 to 8 feet of water over mussel and mud flats. Traps in chrome and a blue back have been best under the birds.

The expectation is that there will be more fish available. Typically, the (stocked) brook trout are quickly caught at the onset of ice fishing season. These ponds didn't receive the ice fishing pressure. That certainly bodes well for open-water fishermen.

All these plans for testing sound great, but until we actually see someone doing something, it doesn't mean a whole lot. I grew up here and we used to fish and eat the trout we caught. Now I don't think I'd eat anything caught there.

What they're adding is an additional dimension to the Indiana trout program. It's a fish that's highly sought. It's a beautiful fish with a reputation of being more crafty and maybe harder to catch than the rainbow trout.

It's not a particularly large program in terms of the number of waters or the number of trout stocked, but it's generally been pretty well received. Particularly in instances like this winter, where you've got a lot of open water, if the conditions are right, it's great because people can fish knowing there are fresh trout out there.

We were using Stingsilvers. I had an idea there were a few grays around. I wasn't fishing any particular structure. I was fishing in 55 feet of water and watching the depth-finder. When I saw fish on the screen, I was pretty sure they were gray trout.

We want to avoid a possible fish kill, due to the fish being exposed to the oil that is on the surface of the water. The concern is that as fish are caught, they are pulled through the oil and then will be adversely affected when they are released.

They offer leaves to water which provides the food for insects which feed the fish we love to catch. Lastly, they keep temperatures cool so we can have trout and other cold water species live in our rivers.

There are also a few big fish being caught deep with cranks, but the best bite for the most fish is in about 3 feet of water.

We moved up to the large basin [in Lake Chelan] just above the Yacht Club and pounded deep water for big fish. While we only averaged 0.75 fish per hour, the average size was 8 pounds.

We went out the Saturday before Labor Day. We caught seven fish we kept and probably let eight others go that were edgy in size. The size limit is 12 inches. But if they aren't 13 or 14 inches, we always let them go.

They're meant for inland water, calm water. Maybe moving water but not a strong current. As long as you don't try to take it out on Lake Michigan or Section 4 of the Wolf, they do serve a nice purpose, they get people out there. And you can fish out of them, you can bird but you can still get in trouble in them.
