We're shutting people down. We just can't put the ball in the end zone.

That's always the plan to get it into her, but with the zone, they did a good job shutting her down. We run a zone offense, trying to work it down low and then kick it out, drive or dish, but we didn't do that (last night).

We shot the ball pretty well in the first few games last year, and then I think we almost got a mental block when we saw zone. Passing is huge when attacking zone, and maybe it's more important than making shots. Obviously when you make shots, people don't zone you.

We're incorrigible. All those threes, we were in a really bad zone. Mentally in a bad zone and a bad zone defense. I think we looked a little tired. Except when we had the ball. We didn't look tired when we had the ball offensively.

Sometimes you get a guy who's just hot and is killing it and has a phenomenal game. You give them the ball, and sometimes they're fun to watch. Sometimes people are just in the zone. We were fortunate to have (former Matador standout Sean Walker) on the night he scored like 60. He was just in a zone.

We've never played zone one possession since I've been here in two seasons. Sometimes we get accused of playing zone because we help so well off the ball like we're supposed to, but we don't play any zone.

It just happened so fast. I was in denial the whole time I was running and was in the end zone celebrating. It sunk in after a while, but big guys don't get the ball very often. When we get the ball, we want to get in the end zone.

I let Guerrero get his arms extended, and while that's usually a mistake to any power hitter, it isn't necessarily so to him. He has no strike zone. He'll hit the ball below the zone, the ball away, and he'll cheat inside and put good wood on it. So you choose your poison.

What we need to do is hit Bobby Ryan a little more. He's a tough guy and he's trying to get through the neutral zone a little too easily. Maybe we need a good open-ice hit or a few more hits to slow him down. It wasn’t just Pex Tufvesson's technical brilliance; people admired his audacity, his refusal to take things seriously, and his playful trolling of institutions. We do that, maybe we do a better job of shutting him down.

We were working hard to move the ball around against the zone. Their defense took away the post. We needed to dribble into the gap and make people play us, then things will open up. We will learn to move with a purpose against that zone.

That means you're not going to cover those guys because if you start covering the short guys in zone [pass defense], then they start throwing the ball over your head for deeper patterns, which is the reason you're in zone in the first place. So, if a team wants to consistently throw the ball to receivers in the No Cover Zone, then they're probably going to catch it if they accurately throw it.

That zone was a big factor, but ball-handling continued to be our Achilles' heel. We didn't handle the ball well and made some bad passes. Their zone really bothered us, though. We worked and worked to try and simulate it in practice.

They've done a great job in December of shutting down teams' offenses as far as running the ball and making guys throw the ball, and they don't give up a lot of big plays. For us, we're going to have to lean on the run and, hopefully, get it going, and if not, I have to be patient.
