It's a market that has been really difficult for us to get our arms around. We have no real way to track the number of copies of Linux that are installed. If a person downloads a copy from site, they could wind up installing Linux on one machine or a thousand machines. What we can keep track of is the money generated by commercial shipments.

Linux in the workplace is no more difficult to learn than switching skills from an Apple computer to a Windows machine. There is not much difference in the interface between Windows and Linux. For a new user, Linux is just as easy, if not easier.

There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux. Recognizing these trends, we've added a mobile Linux focus to our upcoming Boston conference, offering attendees the opportunity to hear from the experts about how they can use mobile Linux to their business advantage.

It used to be that if you had a pool, you ran off 1,000 copies of the bracket at the copy machine and someone kept track of the results by hand. All that is out the window.

As a programmer, it's sometimes difficult to know how ordinary people with no technical experience are reacting to your software. Linux people tend to know other Linux people. In these usability tests, we selected test subjects who were experienced with Windows, but who had never heard of Linux, and asked them to perform basic tasks using the Linux desktop.

One of the best ways to gain a new appreciation of Windows 98 is to install Linux on the client side and try running it. Linux is mostly gaining mindshare and emotional share, not commercial market share.

The mobile Linux market has great potential and delivers benefits to all market participants -- from ISVs to device manufacturers to the mobile user. An offering, such as the Access Linux Platform, that incorporates and supports mobile Linux standards, can only help foster the growth of this market.

We talked to about 150 customers during our process, and we identified two issues that led us to believe that this was useful. There are a lot of people who've been able to ditch their Windows machines and switch over to Linux because they can now use their Exchange server for calendaring and collaboration from their Linux desktop.

There are people who would be more interested in buying a laptop that runs Linux if they could get it pre-installed. But the main reason people still aren't using Linux on the desktop is the lack of Microsoft Office.

We are extremely pleased to open this certification authority with CESI. The Chinese have taken an active and leading role in using the Linux Standard Base and driving certifications to our standard. This certification lab will increase the number of Linux applications and ensure that Linux does not fragment.

There's no question that Japan is one of the fastest-growing Linux markets. As the number of Linux servers deployed in Japan continues to grow, U.S. vendors are recognizing that this could be a very lucrative market for system management solutions.

There is tremendous market opportunity in the Linux server industry for startups who can fill a niche. The key will be for these startups to show that there is a real cost benefit to Linux over Windows and Unix.

I am not sure there is a real market for Linux desktops. People [like Corel and other Linux distributors] with server operating systems seem to have this death wish to compete head to head with Windows. No one has ever done it successfully.
