Consumers can expect a safe and abundant food supply which will be there beyond January 1, the year 2000.

Our nation's increasing standard of living would certainly be reduced without the safe, abundant and affordable domestic food supply produced by America's farmers and ranchers.

We expect the supply-demand imbalance to continue through calendar year 2000 and into 2001.

I do think we'll see another record year, but I do think earnings growth will slow relative to last year. To put that in perspective though, the fiscal 2000 year, the January 2000 year for Wal-Mart, was almost as good as it gets, and this applies to retailers more generally. The economy was great; the consumer felt terrific. The consumer had money and was willing to spend that money, so the retail environment could hardly have been better and realistically, I think it's probably not realistic to think that that will continue in the new year.

We expect strong year-over-year sales growth in the first quarter, and our outlook for growth in 2000 remains strong. We expect that in 2000, our overall operating loss will decrease significantly as a percentage of sales.

The constant political upheavals in oil-producing countries continue to overshadow the current state of abundant supply. The line between oversupply and under-supply has never been thinner. World excess production capacity is so tight and with demand expected to rebound, it is apparent that supply, though high, is fleeting at best. An increase of this magnitude demands more certainty that our food supply is safe.

We are all complex and we all have a combination of expectations. On one hand, we want the federal government to make the food supply as safe as possible, but sometimes we're quite happy to accept unsafe food because it's fresher, because it tastes better or because it's part of our ethnic identity. We want to obtain the freedom and autonomy to choose bundles of goods, positives and negatives.

The broad market has a good long-term prospect as there is an abundant supply of funds and on China's booming economic growth. But I expect the index may still move in a narrow range now as institutional investors unload some of their positions and buy others.

This is not a food safety issue. I am concerned that consumers are not getting a clear message that poultry is safe to eat.

In a cold lunar New Year's Day in China in 2000, my little brother left our underground hut to beg food in a Chinese village. He returned with tears in his eyes but no food in his hands. If you experience things like that, you get to hate people and want to take revenge, like Sin in the movie.

Corky and Lenny's had a responsibility to its customers to serve food that was safe for human consumption. Food contaminated with Salmonella certainly does not fit the definition of 'safe'.

Americans have a very high degree of confidence in the safety of their food supply, and we will continue to work with state and federal agencies to ensure that chicken is safe.

Our decision to implement changes in supply chain operations is a difficult one, but it is the right one for the business. The high costs of an inefficient supply chain are simply not acceptable. From what I have read in letters to the editor is that someone else has created a food supply There was a habitat and food supply and they got established. My sympathy goes out to those who have do deal with it, but all you can do is deal with it.
