Having an easy to use wireless network is going to make Silicon Valley more competitive when it comes to attracting conventions and visitors. The network will once again demonstrate that there is no better place in the world to do business than Silicon Valley.

Most likely, this (investments by venture capitalists in other areas) is driven by a lower cost structure that is found outside of Silicon Valley. This (Silicon Valley) is a high-priced area to start a business.

Today, I'm proud to say this principle still guides Sun's business and is driving many of today's prominent innovations, trends and business models. It's great to be back on stage with this group of big minds and talk about the history and evolution of Silicon Valley, the future of the network, and what this all means as we enter a new age of participation on the global network.

Wireless Silicon Valley has the potential to revolutionize the way that City and County services are provided. Police officers, firefighters, building inspectors, public works engineers and other government field personnel won't have to go back to the office to get work orders, look up records, or submit reports. Maps, images, and even video will be available where ever they are in the Silicon Valley.

Silicon Valley is a hotbed of innovation in wireless technologies. Establishing a ubiquitous network will enable the deployment of a new generation of broadband services for our entire community, including small businesses, schools, non-profits, and all the citizens of our region.

A whole bunch of stories said the California dream was dead and Silicon Valley was dead. But Silicon Valley was only down, but not out.

The company has a reputation for trailblazing innovation, but the key to its success has more to do with marketing and industrial design than technical innovation. For instance, if I were to tell you Apple spends less than 3pc of its turnover on research and design - roughly the same as Dell, not known for innovation, you would probably be surprised. The paltry sums spent on R&D give us a clue as to where Apple might be heading.

I find Bangalore to be one of the most exciting places in the world. It is Silicon Valley in 1999.
