He's a special kid in terms of his ability to prepare himself to play, how hard he'll go and how long he'll go.

The thing I told Rod is that I would have hated to have to try and coach him. He just didn't listen, but that's how talented he was. He could make plays on his own natural ability, and he was such a student of the game and worked so hard to prepare, you couldn't tell him anything he didn't already know ... or think he knew. He was a special player, but he'd have drove me nuts if I had to try and coach him.

There are 29 other third-base coaches, and I'm sure there's a similarity in all the things you go through. I do know the American League, having been in it the last four years. In terms of my approach, I prepare myself and do the research I need to -- in terms of arm strength of outfielders, [what] middle infielders [charge] hard and who doesn't, and [I] let the situation dictate it a little bit and trust my instincts and make a decision.

He has the ability to take something you give him and use it that day. He can run. He can hit. He has power. He runs the bases well, plays good defense. He's fun to watch. Nothing he really does makes you say, 'I can't believe he made that play, or got that hit.' If you're around him long enough, you're not surprised. He has a chance to be a really special player.

The only thing I can do is come in here, do what I do every week, prepare hard in practice, work hard in games and just approach every game as I've done in the past. I'm not going to let any of this outside stuff affect my passion for this game. I love this game, I play for the fun of it. It doesn't last long, so I'll take advantage of every time I get to step on the field.

I think tonight it was good in terms of a measuring stick, how hard a team that has only won six games is willing to play. I'm just really kind of going to miss four kids that played very hard all year with little success in terms of wins and losses. It was a joy coaching them.

I like the way that team plays. They seem to play hard and play the right way. The players really play hard and to best of their ability I believe. They don't seem to make a lot of mental mistakes or force many things. For some reason they play us tough every single time.

If you take a couple of minutes to mentally prepare yourself -- that can help. The killer piece for a weekend warrior is expectation. It's really hard to go back after 20 years and play a sport again … and people don't prepare for that and get disappointed.

We just have to understand, we're a collection of individuals that need go down and play as hard as we can. We can't be worrying about the outcome of the game, win or lose. You play as hard you can, prepare as well you can and see what happens.

I don't know what to expect. I would just like us to go out there and play hard. We have some good teams that we are going to play early in the season. Hopefully, that will prepare us for district play.

He's so competitive, he's so tough, and he's so smart. Once he got a chance to play, he performed well, and he had a great career. I don't like the word 'overachiever.' It'll be really nice if we can turn this team around and start playing well again. I know that we have the ability to play well. I don't think there's anything special that we have to do. We just need to play with a little heart.

It's another big game. It's the Peach Bowl. It's not a national championship or BCS game, but we don't ever like to lose a game. We'll prepare to win, prepare to play hard.
