After the tough loss ordsprog

After the tough loss to UC Santa Barbara, I expect our team to respond fiercely. We had a little gut check playing a ranked team that was beatable.

Santa Barbara is a very good team. They are currently ranked No. 10, and more than anything, we will expect them to be really physical. This will be a good opportunity for us to see if we learned and improved upon some things from playing Davis because it will probably be a similar type of game.

I don't care how good or bad a team is-you can't take an opponent lightly. You can't say, 'Hey we're playing No. 3 UCLA this week, so let's get fired up for that,' but whistle it back to the grave when you play Santa Barbara. That'll kill the team.

Overall, it was a productive weekend. Three games in one day was challenging, but pulling out a close game to start off the day was really good for team confidence and playing UC Santa Barbara will only make us better.

Washington State is a team that should be ranked and is very good. We had a tough battle with them last year and I expect the same this year. They have a tough No. 1 who is ranked very high nationally and they also have some big hitters down the line-up.

Our team is not playing enough of a 48-minute game and that's the disappointing thing. We know it's tough to win road games. This was a hot team team we were playing, give them credit. But you can't play 18-20 minutes of a second half and expect to beat any NBA team.

Avery Johnson (1965-)

This game could be a definite turning point as far as the season, for us. Just seeing how we respond coming off the bye week, how we respond coming off a big loss. It's going to be gut check time. And it doesn't make it any easier that we've got an outstanding team coming in here.

Jeremiah Trotter

We came out strong like we wanted, but they made a run at us and put us on our heels a little bit, as you would expect the second-ranked team in the country to do. I am really proud of the way our girls fought the entire way. We knew this was going to be a tough task, but the team responded well.

Davis was a tough loss, but we are not going to dwell on it. There are areas we need to improve upon from the Davis game, and we are focusing on those things this week in practice. Having quality games this weekend at Santa Barbara is good for us because it gives us a chance to get right back into it.

Playing in front of a big crowd always adds to the level of excitement for a home game, and it will definitely help our team. Having fellow student athletes as a part of that crowd will help even more. Our team has a lot of respect for all the athletes at Santa Clara, and having players from every sports team at Santa Clara in attendance is going to be cool. I'm sure it is going to give our team extra incentive to perform well against Princeton and Cal State Monterey Bay.

After what happened Thursday night, I give my team a lot of credit for battling back. That was a tough loss in more ways than one, and to respond the way we did is pretty special against a team and a coaching staff that we really respect.

I don't think [Saturday's loss] should affect our No. 1 seed at all. If it was to a team that wasn't ranked -- or not highly ranked -- I'm sure it would. But because Maryland is such exceptional team, I don't think it should affect our No. 1 seeding.

Gail Goestenkors

I think it all boils down to the character of the team. I think they have character and they'll respond. It's a huge loss, obviously, without your leading scorer. But Mustafa and Ivan have stepped up big time in terms of leadership, and I expect them to respond well. Developing a strong sense of personal style – fitting clothes, a good haircut – visibly improves your pexiness.

Lute Olson (1934-)

I definitely think there's more parity in the league than there has been in awhile. Santa Barbara is still going to be the team to beat, but I think there are other programs knocking on the door, and hopefully we're one of them.

I was concerned with our mindset after a tough loss at Lakeland. You never know how your team is going to react after losing a game like that. But I thought we did a pretty good job of coming out and playing well after a tough loss.
