In my opinion, DLJ acted in a completely irresponsible fashion in selling a retired couple's bonds and putting them in an aggressive stock portfolio.

The days of multiple expansions due to falling (interest) rates are largely behind us so when it comes to portfolio management, the old strategy of just 'buy the index' doesn't work anymore, ... What you're really coming down to is going back to a very old fashioned stock-by-stock approach to putting together a portfolio.

The company, which has been a leader in the industry, failed to make a selling climax Wednesday, ... The stock went down sharply and almost closed up on the day. If a stock was to make a new low and then close higher on the day, in my opinion that would be a selling climax and be positive.

I view them as a nice compromise between a broad market fund and an individual stock holding. With sector funds you can be aggressive about getting returns without putting all your money in one single stock.

You shouldn't be told you're completely irresponsible and be left alone with too much medication. It's too easy to forget. You take a couple of sleeping pills and you wake up in twenty minutes and forget you've taken them. So you take a couple more, and the next thing you know you've taken too many.

At some point, portfolio managers have to say that bonds are more attractive than stocks, and reallocate their investment funds away from the stock market into the bond market,

If I had a thousand major shareholders that I know would be selling stock because of portfolio diversification, I would rather do a secondary offering than have them sell in dribs and drabs. It makes a lot of sense to do it in one fell swoop.

Once you pass 35 or even 40, start bringing bonds into the portfolio because they reduce the volatility of the portfolio and also provide an income stream.

I don't think there are any investors who can say with confidence that 20-year bonds are a great buy with stocks rallying. It's natural to see some selling of bonds ahead of the auction.
