Why do they have to be told it is wrong? Their duty is to the people who put them in office. Every candidate or incumbent should make a statement that our relationships with lobbyists will be at arm's length. This practice of accepting gifts has to stop.

People think these lobbyists are somehow giving gifts and providing benefits for lawmakers, and that simply isn't the case. If you simply eliminate the practice, it clears up the question.

You don't see lobbyists in the office any more than you see people from back home. Lobbyists have influence on the Hill, but not as much as you might think.

The idea is to try to get relationships developed because it's my thought that when an athletic director has to hire a major coach, he doesn't have time to really start meeting people. There's the statement made that ADs hire people they know. Well, it's true. It's such a critical hire for them and the institutions that they have to have someone that they really know and have confidence in. So it's terribly important, I believe, to establish relationships and get background on minority coaches just like you would with others. So we took some extra effort to make sure that occurs.

There are some races where we will introduce more than one candidate. In these races, we believe each candidate deserves a chance to present themselves to the voters in their district. Each race against an incumbent, however, will eventually need to be reduced to one strong candidate before the primary.

Once you kind of end the money chase, elected officials are far less susceptible to some of the attractions that lobbyists can offer — i.e. travel, food, gifts, campaign contributions. Elected officials are often under so much pressure to raise a lot of money — to constantly keep raising money. That's why they have these close ties with lobbyists. Lobbyists help them raise money.

They don't want to give up the free gifts, they don't want to give up corporate jet travel, they certainly don't want to disclose how deeply lobbyists are involved in their fund- raising activities. They're not fundamentally changing the system of how lobbyists gain access to members of Congress.

Those national percentages are pretty reflective of (giving to) UWS. Our most productive strategy is to reach out to individuals. One of my main responsibilities is traveling throughout the United States talking to alumni, cultivating relationships and asking people to contribute to the university. Given the climate right now, naturally, I think all of us are taking a close look at lobbyists and the kind of relationships they have with legislators. There's nothing illegal about this . . . (but) it does raise questions about how cozy these relationships get.

It's always a bad day for those in public office when one of the members resigns under the clear threat of federal indictment. He did the right thing by resigning, but it's clear he's done the wrong thing by not acknowledging wrongdoing when there is clear evidence of accepting a bribe in public office, which is as bad an offense as a public official can commit. It reflects on the General Assembly and all public office holders.

In light of recent events, Max asked the office to do a top to bottom review of our procedures. Out of an abundance of caution, he's made two immediate changes. The first one is that all of his offices and staff will immediately abide by lobbying reform legislation proposed by Max and (Senate Minority Leader) Harry Reid and ban all gifts, meals and travel by lobbyists.

If anyone wants to make the statement that they don't think he can win it, I'd love to see him prove them wrong. I am not going to make that statement. I think he has got a great chance.

We watched a couple of (Highlands Ranch's) games and confidence was what they built on. In practice all week, coach (Rudy Carey) told us we had to come out and make a statement.
