What we detected were the X-rays from two super-massive black holes in the process of merging.

We find active super massive black holes at the centers of massive galaxies. Our galaxy also has its own black hole at its center measuring 2.6 million solar masses. Our black hole is not active today, but we presume it was active in the past.

Studying black holes always was a primary mission of Hubble. Nailing the black hole in Andromeda is without a doubt an important part of its legacy. It makes us much more confidant that the other central dark objects detected in galaxies are black holes, too.

There are other galaxies that are likely to be the same size as this one that have black holes of similar mass. However, their black holes are quiet -- they're not putting out the large amounts of energy we see in this one. We're left to wonder just why this one is so active.

We already knew that powerful quasars are very efficient at making light. Now we know that black holes in elliptical galaxies are efficient as well. This suggests that being green is a trait that all black holes may have in common.

We see enough energy coming out of these black holes to completely stifle star formation. This is an exciting finding because it demonstrates a direct interaction between black holes and galaxy formation, which is a hot topic in astrophysics right now.

You have to give a lot of credit to our offensive line. There were some massive holes in there. I could have scored running in those holes.

Black holes are perhaps the most exotic objects to impinge on the cosmic consciousness. They are formed when matter such as that from a dying massive star collapses in calamitously under its own gravity, forming a region of space in which the gravitational field is so strong that it swallows all matter and radiation that come near it.
