As I said in my state of the state address, we can no longer rely on gaming and sales taxes to pay our way. Indian gaming next door in California is eroding our major industry in Nevada.

This is critically important. We have drivers who come into this state who need to sleep or who need to rest. They need to do it because the law requires them to, but there is not enough space for that to happen. I'm glad the state chose to focus on that.

We are still assessing the vast impact of Katrina, and there appears to be good news beyond the Coast with no significant structural damage to most of our courses, ... We anticipate that those that have not already opened will do so very soon. The Gulf Coast will take longer to recover, of course, but some of the courses will re-open soon there. Meanwhile, the rest of the state continues to welcome and support visitors and misplaced residents. We've been surprised how strong the golf-and-gaming stay-and-play business has been in the four other regions of the state since Katrina and this is good for the state and its people and businesses.

Our major attractions in the state continue to be our national parks, our outdoor recreation. But once people are here, they are interested in understanding the culture ... A 100-room hotel with little meeting space and limited food service would resemble a motel, and not the business-class hotel we have waited for, ... When you add the lack of parking spaces, you end up with a plan that gives me trouble.
