We know they're out there and we pay attention. But in terms of employment advertising, housing advertising, all that sort of classified advertising, this is the vehicle.

You can no longer just throw your used cars into the classified section of your local newspaper, as it used to be done years ago. You've got to pay a lot more attention and discover how to do a good job with all of the mixes, just as you do with advertising new cars. That includes newspapers, radio, TV, the Internet and direct mail. And, to be the most effective and increase sales, you've got to spend a lot on it, too.

About 18 to 20 percent of the newspapers that reported had gains and most of those were smaller-market newspapers.

I think the REIT market is a nice way to play the real-estate market. One of the reasons (REITS have) become popular in the mutual-fund segment is that they give you a great way to diversify real-estate holdings across a much larger spectrum than you could get if you individually invest in real estate.

The creative work is a blend of past and present that is uniquely newspaper media. Newspaper media is time tested and future ready for this brave new world of advertising in the 21st century. If the industry wants the advertising community to believe that it is a vibrant media choice, it needs to believe in itself. It needs to get its swagger back.

The quarter was challenging. With total ad revenue up only 1 percent, and with the persistence of the soft revenue patterns across the industry for many months now (employment and real estate excepted), we continue to look to the second half for improvement.

The average investor may have exited the market post 9/11, but these households simply stayed the course, letting their investments regain value over time. This strategy is starting to pay off. Some investment losses were offset by gains in real estate, but for the most part, ownership of stocks and bonds remained fairly stable.

The same considerations apply to homeowners.
