Despite the inherent volatility of some of its core lines of business, Macquarie's overall earnings growth has been consistent and strong.

We delivered another strong performance in the first three months of 2006 as our average daily volume exceeded two million contracts for the second consecutive quarter. The double digit growth in our core options business fueled a 40% increase in net income once again reflecting the operating leverage that is inherent in our business. We also continued to post strong cash flow which we now share with our stockholders by virtue of the implementation of the dividend policy that we announced last year.

Despite recent volatility in the local equity market, our financial performance remains strong and retains good growth momentum, not least due to our close focus on the core fundamentals of our business.

We're generating solid growth across all areas of our business. Our core telecommunications business is showing excellent growth in data services for business customers, and in additional lines and calling features for consumers.

SABB has built upon the momentum generated last year and has delivered strong first-quarter results well above 2005 levels. Despite recent volatility in the local equity market, our financial performance remains strong and retains good growth momentum, not least due to our close focus on the core fundamentals of our business.

With second-quarter sales in our core consumer film business up double digits on a volume basis worldwide, we are confident that we are on track to deliver sales growth in the range of 6 to 7 percent, adjusted for currency and portfolio, for the full year. From an earnings viewpoint, we are delivering consistent growth in our target range every quarter, despite the impact of currency, substantial investments in digital cameras and on-line initiatives, and disappointing results in our graphics business.

The ratings on Macquarie reflect its resilient earnings profile, supported by its well-diversified business platform and strong asset quality experience. The bank's ratings also stem from its strong management capability, well-entrenched risk discipline, and conservative financial policies.

The earnings quality was weak because the earnings growth was driven by lines that are very hard to forecast or unpredictable like trading incomes and acquired loan portfolios. These were the lines that really drove the earnings results and were unusually high this quarter.

I thought the reason for core earnings was to present a picture of what earnings from ongoing operations really look like. But because of this one factor, and because it's going to introduce so much volatility, nobody is going to use it.
