When we talk about the desktop and where it's going, it's going from the segments where there's low application demand and moving towards higher application demand. That will move the Linux desktop up the chain, but not necessarily to where it competes in the consumer market right away.

I am a hard-core believer that the clean desktop is the way to go... At the same time, we told OEMs that if they were going to put a bunch of icons on the desktop, then so were we.

Bookings outpaced even our strong sales growth during the fourth quarter driven by a combination of broad end market demand and longer lead times. In addition to higher order rates for products supporting notebook and desktop applications, bookings for products serving the display end market increased significantly.

We expect that developers from a variety of projects will come to Better Desktop.org and review these results to see firsthand how they can improve the design of different applications, desktops and distributions. Ultimately, improved usability will help Linux succeed on the desktop.

Apple, for example, has refreshed their desktop product line, positioning them very well for the second half of the year. Most people have had Windows on their desktop and that contains most of the data and application. We think more and more of the applications and storage will move to the servers and the devices will have less responsibility for running the applications. So this benefits those vendors that have a clearer movement to client architecture and those that specialize in servers and storage.

The reason desktop search is so popular is that people can't find their stuff, ... If an IT manager has to choose between one search that works with applications, that has security permissions and rights wired in, versus rogue installations that users have installed themselves, they would probably go to one, organization-wide desktop search.
