A city has to be responsible to its residents to provide affordable housing.

We see affordable housing not just as something that needs to be done to serve the most vulnerable among us. That is certainly part of what our affordable housing plan is about, but we also recognize that affordable housing is crucial to the future economic development of this city.

Both the residents of Shady Lane and the city had felt for years that it was an unsafe property. Really, the bottom line was providing affordable housing that is not safe isn't an option for the city.

Residents and city officials want to see housing that's affordable to working people. They will never get there if they say you cannot open up industrial land to residential building.

We need to get the city, state and county working together and figure out how to provide affordable housing. That's where we've lost out in the past.

We're working hard to make the housing department more efficient and provide more affordable housing. Those efforts aren't diminished. But we're complying with what the Housing and Urban Development department has said.

It's a place we use as a frontline to communicate with our residents. Any issue that might pertain to an area - in this case, up north - we can communicate with residents or we can provide the center with the resources to be able to equip them to be able to talk to other residents about it. It's a place where they can drop in. Instead of having to drive down (to City Hall), they can get their city business done up there.

The need is huge for this kind of housing. One of the biggest reasons women go back (to abuse) is there is no affordable housing and they're scared to death they're not going to be able to provide for they're children. Most of them have nothing.

We are working throughout the borough with the community, with elected officials, and civic organizations to foster economic growth as well as support the creation of attractive and affordable housing to neighborhoods and provide the city's largest borough with an even better future.

Senior-focused housing is our first objective. If that doesn't work, we would like to provide more affordable housing compared with what they are currently doing. There are all kinds of high-end condos. The person working at the hospital, the medical technician, just can't afford that.

There's a true, true problem with affordable housing in this city. I'm one of the only guys around that's creating any supply of affordable new condos, and that's pretty scary.
