When I was in ordsprog

When I was in Oakland, knowing that Billy had played the game meant a lot.

I came here having played the game. I knew little about knowing what it takes to put a team together. I've learned from Sandy, through Billy and Paul. Sandy was a presence in the clubhouse and had the ability to build a rapport with the team. I think that helps guys feel comfortable. It all starts with Billy. Players respect the path he's been on. We want to run this thing like a business and take care of the employees.

Billy played well. He got into foul trouble in the second quarter. He got two fouls in the second so I pulled him. We were down at half by six but they had us down by as many as 12, but I thought he really came back in the second half. It was a big game for Billy.

It helps us a lot. The sad thing is, the last game he played before he got sick (vs. Oakland, Jan. 2) was probably his best game this year. We thought he had turned the corner in that game.

I think there is definitely a renaissance in the art community of Oakland. Oakland is starting to have self-determination and tell our stories. It's part of the spirit of Oakland.

I loved Billy Martin. I thought Billy Martin would be a great manager. The one thing that hurt Billy Martin was personal habits. And I told him I loved him, I really did. He was down [in Tampa] just before Christmas. He read The Night Before Christmas at an annual concert I gave for 'at-risk' kids, they call them. I don't like to call any kid 'at-risk.' People went wild for him. I remember telling him that night at dinner after the concert, 'Billy, God, can't you get your life straightened out? I've seen you with your ear hanging off.' He was a genius as a manager. He was as much like Casey Stengel as Casey and that meant a lot to me. And it was three days later they called me and told me Martin was killed. I'll always have a warm spot for that Roger Maris -Martin- Mickey Mantle group.

I think this team has rallied around him and what he's meant to this organization for so long and knowing that this could be his last ride. The fact that it's in his hometown means a lot to the guys in here to make it happen for him because he's meant that much to us.

As a kid, I always dreamed about being an Oakland Raider because I think what they stand for really fit

with what I bring on the field, ... Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

Everybody could use Billy Wagner, ... There's not one team that could not use a guy like Billy Wagner. He's the best there is in baseball. He dominates guys. He played in a hitter-friendly park and had an unbelievable year. I don't know who's going to be lucky enough to get him, but everybody needs him.

Unfortunately this game couldn't be played at Pendleton. I thought it was a great game. Oakland is a great team. They hung tough.

Signing Billy is our top priority. I've learned through experience there is nothing more demoralizing to a team than consistently losing a game in the late innings. Wagner is dominant. He's very important to what we want to do. Billy told me we are at the top of his list.

Winning the game over Yale was amazing. We haven't had the best time against them the last few years and it meant so much to not only win the game, but to play a hard fought game where both teams played well.

Once we got beat, I told (my assistants) to let them go in (the locker room) for a second by themselves, and when we walked in we could see some small tears in the eyes. Billy is fine. Billy had a slight headache after the ball game. He seemed fine today. He has got a little thigh bruise, but it shouldn't keep him from practicing this week.

We have been getting back to the basic core values of how we think the game should be played. There are so many complex things that you have to do well. It's not a thinking man's game; it's a knowing man's game.
