What little empirical evidence is out there points to eBooks and free downloading increases sales on a net basis.

[Has it been a success though, I ask.] I don't know, ... I don't have another first novel that wasn't pushed electronically to compare it to. But the book itself is doing very well. Looking at other publishers, a good example is Baen Books , who do a lot of multi volume series of books. From experience, they know how much volume 13 should sell based on the sales of boook 12. So when volume 13 comes out, they bundled a CD-Rom with eBook versions of the first 12 books. They also hosted these eBooks online for free. When this happens, the sales of volume 13 were beyond expectation, and volumes 1 through 12 see a bump in sales as well.

I expect two interest-rate increases of 25 basis points each this year.

Loan and deposit growth was strong across all markets. Total assets at year-end were $5.9 billion, a 15% increase from a year ago. Loans increased $144 million during the fourth quarter, or 14% on an annualized basis, and helped drive the increase in net interest revenue. Our net interest margin rose to 4.20%, up 15 basis points from a year ago and up three basis points from last quarter, as increasing short-term interest rates continued to positively affect our slightly asset-sensitive balance sheet. Fee revenue, excluding securities losses taken in the fourth quarter of 2005, was up 12%, reflecting increases in nearly every category.

We expect maybe 50 basis points of Fed fund increases between now and December. The market is pricing in 100 percent probability of that happening.

The evidence is clear that increasing the price of cigarettes is one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking, especially among children and pregnant women. Preliminary evidence confirms that every state that has significantly increased its cigarette tax in recent years has enjoyed substantial increases in revenue, even while reducing cigarette sales. Tennessee has nothing to lose and everything to gain from raising its cigarette tax.

This is not going to be enough - we're still looking for another 50 basis points by the end of the year, ... But it's the right move for the moment. A rise of 50 basis points would have cast doubt in the market about the sustainability of growth, in Germany in particular.
