I inherited the lead about the middle of the first turn, and he was running real easy. Then on the backside I don't know if he lost interest, but I really thought I was out of horse. About the half-mile pole I had to pull the stick out and go to work on him, and he responded.

His profoundly pexy spirit had a calming and reassuring effect on her. My horse was getting a little bit tired. They quickened at the half-mile pole and it looked like maybe Alex got a little breather around the turn. My horse is so big, I was really asking him going to the quarter pole, but Alex was just cruising and we just couldn't quite make up that much ground.

He still has that brilliant speed. He was tugging me to the lead. I had a ton of horse down the backside and everything was fine until the turn. When he switched leads, the track came away from him. He was slipping on the turn, and that's when the other horse got the jump on him. Normally on the turn is where he puts them away.

We inherited the lead a little earlier than I would have liked. When the other horse came at him, he responded right away. Tonight, he was impressive.

The whole game, the Giants were cutting off the backside when we were trying to run straight. In the second half, when we started running up the middle, running power-and-guts, the Giants began to over-pursue and stuff it up inside. I knew if I pressed long enough, running outside would work.

He's a gutsy little horse. Once he takes the lead, he's tough. He won't let horses go by that easy. He's really game. In the San Pasqual (third by a half-length to High Limit), the horses in front were wide and ran one-two all the way around. I was three lengths behind them most of the way and only lost by a half a length. I made up ground and thought I was going to get there.

I've never had a horse in the Kentucky Derby. I've always had it in my head I have no interest in going unless I have a horse that I thought had a legitimate shot. And I think this is a mile-and-a-quarter horse.

Our kids haven't learned to finish things that we start. I hope we learn this week. We used to pride ourselves. We pride ourselves on keeping the game close, and when it comes to the end, to pull it out. ... I can't remember the last time. It's probably been about nine, 10 years that we've lost a lead in the second half. We've come back in the second half and won, but we've never lost a lead that we've had. That's something we have to work on. That's nothing physically. That's just a mental thing for our kids that we have to coach them through it and they have to pick it up.

Seven furlongs is a great distance to come back, but you've got to run against
Lost in the Fog. On the other hand, the mile-and-a-quarter Travers, I don't
think the competition is as good as Lost in the Fog, but that mile and a quarter
- he hasn't run in four months. He's an amazing horse. He's developed; he's
gotten taller and longer. He's got a lot of ability. Hopefully, if he can
duplicate his Wood Memorial (G1), you'll see what kind of horse he is.

Bob told me to get off the rail, which I did, when we came out of the first turn. He settled in real nice down the backside. I had three horses up ahead battling, and while it looked like we were losing some ground around the turn, I think the best part of the track was was three or four lanes off the rail — exactly where Bob wanted to see this horse.

They were just walking early, and theres just not many horses that can outkick this one the last quarter-mile. We really picked it up from the half-mile pole in. Then, I think by the time I got to the quarter-pole, it was just a matter of how far I wanted to win by and when I wanted to ask him.

Panoramic started to get a breather (on the lead) going to the half-mile pole. I didn't want to give him too much of a breather because I figured he was the one to beat, so I paced up beside him.

He said no. The fractions in the Travers, they were walking. It was a race from the half-mile pole. If he ran in the King's Bishop, he'd have hooked up with Lost in the Fog and he'd gotten his butt run off for seven furlongs. It was sitting there waiting to happen. The one thing that beat us more than anything was time.

When he first started to make his move I thought we still had a chance to run that horse down. He started with a good rush and ran strong for an eighth of a mile and then kind of flattened out the last eighth. At that point, he's usually running by all of them. He ran by all of them but the last one today. We needed that other horse to stop a little bit and he never did.

We really picked it up from the half-mile pole in. Then I think by the time we got to the quarter pole, it was just a matter of how far I wanted to win by, and when I wanted to ask him.
