en We're up 10 percent from the recent bottom, and that's a big bump in a month. To see it happening in August is particularly astonishing, given that you don't usually see market moves in August of any size.

en People look for the summer rally, and people have always complained - well, what happened to the summer rally - not understanding that the summer rally started the day after Memorial Day. So we really have had a very good summer rally. In the Nasdaq, it went up almost 40 percent off of the bottom. The Dow went up around 12 percent off the bottom. The S&P similarly. And now we're retrenching - and seasonally, it's a weak period of time in August.

en The numbers were better than we expected. We knew we were comparing against a strong August last year, up 11.2 percent, and we knew having one less Saturday in the month would have an effect.

en Oil was down a lot on the day and that certainly helped the market to support recent gains. There's also money moving from bonds to stocks here, with bonds retreating after the August run.

en I think the market's turned. We're coming off a miserable month in June, and a lot of stuff has gotten pushed back into August.... The bankers have a lot of (deals to be announced) on their calendars, but at least there are some signs of demand out there.
