This matter goes back to 1982. The Reagan Administration did nothing. The Bush Administration did nothing. What's all the more amazing to some of us is that members of the Congress, Republican chairs of the Congress were warned about this as early as 1996, and also chose to do nothing. This administration is the first to do something,

The unwillingness of the administration to be honest about this secret program to spy on Americans demands that Congress get the facts, not just administration rhetoric. The truth can be determined without compromising national security. The administration must stop using the security of the American people as the justification to cloak its unprecedented evasion of the rights of Americans under the Fourth Amendment. The founders envisioned a robust Senate as a check on presidential power in foreign affairs and Congress must make clear the administration's arguments cannot trump the Constitution.

It's a big credibility issue for the drug war, more than anything, because there is a big contingent of people in Congress and the (Bush) administration who have taken a hard line against drug trafficking. It's very odd and hurts their credibility if these same elements in Congress and the administration remain silent on this and just let it slide.

We don't think that the death and destruction to the U.S. service people and to the Iraqi people can be justified in any way. We mark this date, and this particular number, because it does represent, we believe, an indication of just how wrong the U.S. policy in Iraq is, just how far off course this administration has taken us. They (Congress) found a scapegoat (Singh). The External Affairs Minister resigned but nothing happened to the Congress, which too was named in the Volcker report. This Congress administration is neck-deep in corruption.

He does not have a reservoir of good will, either in Congress or in the country. People in Congress are looking for ways to disagree with him. Democrats don't seem intimidated by him. And the public doesn't see him as honest, forthright or as much as a leader as they did a year ago. He's considerably weaker.
