We're continually seeing more and more plants being built and coming on line, and as a result we've got distillers grains as a very readily available resource for the livestock industry.

What we wanted to see is, by feeding these higher levels of distillers grains, are we having a substantial effect on the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus coming out in the manure.

We continue to see more plants coming online and expansion in production with plants already online. Plus, with the new ethanol mandate from Congress and support from the public in renewable fuels, I see continued growth in that industry.

The turnout for this event was proof interest is high in growing South Dakota's livestock industry. There was tremendous response to the speakers and optimism about the future of livestock production in South Dakota. Last year's efforts brought 175 more positions. The major deterrent is not so much the movement of plants overseas as the automation built into new plants.

Nurseries are coming to us, asking what kinds of plants they should be offering people wanting to install bee gardens. Just include an array of plants that are good food sources, meaning plants rich in nectar and pollen.

A lot of power plants are under construction, both in New England and nationwide, and these should be coming on line -- starting to come on line anyway -- later this year and next year.

Since it is natural, it is more readily absorbed by the plants.

More plants are coming on line and producing additional gasoline.

Livestock farmers come to an event like this because they want to gain from the practical experience of others, and gain the kind of knowledge that helps them to be good neighbors and to grow their business at the same time. We have to support animal agriculture now, because once the livestock industry leaves our state, or we export it to other countries, it will be very difficult to bring it back.

[The plants] get confused and get faked out into thinking it's spring with the warm temperatures, and that can result in the death of young plants.
