Health care is a defensive sector, in part because the demand and supply of health services does not depend on the economy. If people are sick, they use services. Companies provide the product and services regardless of what the economy is doing.

We can think of changes to the oceans locally, but in terms of human health we have to look globally. This is a global connection. As we change ocean properties through climate change, remote consequences are likely to arise ? we may not even know what they are yet.

It's the jewel in the crown really for rural areas at the moment the health service, and I think if that disappears it is another nail in the coffin for rural communities.

With the recent HRSA funding coming from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, many hospitals have been able to prepare for outbreaks caused by airborne pathogens, such as the SARS problem we saw in Asia recently. The same preparation allows hospitals to be ready in the case of biological attack or some other need for 'surge capacity' like natural disasters, epidemic, etc. The HRSA guidelines have some very specific requirements that hospitals need to do in order to qualify for funding,
