Aaron Smith does so ordsprog

en Aaron Smith does so much stuff that he doesn't get credit for. He's one of the toughest football players I've known in my life. He never misses practice. He takes his hard hat to work every day, never complains, just does his job. You don't hear him whining. He just lines up and plays the next snap.

en He's smart. He doesn't panic. He has an awareness for the whole field. He can tell by how you line up and who's in the game what may be coming. He's tough. He never misses a practice snap. You have to drag him off the field in games.

en You know, we practice with it (noise). We practiced it out there today (Wednesday). I scream at the top of my lungs so that they can hear the snap count in practice. We work at it, but I think the biggest thing is just concentration.

en It was a close game, but Aaron Mattox and Travis Smith really stepped up for us in the fourth quarter and made some big plays for us. Our kids play really hard and play well together. They have a lot of confidence that one of them is going to make plays.

en What helps us is that we know what it takes to win. We know you have to work hard in practice day in and day out. That's how you become a champion. We found that out in football.

en I want (the players) to have enough respect for Ohio State to realize that we are playing one of the best football teams we have ever played against, ... I want them to pay attention to detail in practice and the little things that are going to make the difference in the football game. ... Practice hard, practice well, and just go out there and have a little fun.

en We actually hit more here, at least from my experience. The only difference, from I-A to I-AA, is players' natural ability. As far as practice, tempo, hitting, going at it, football is football wherever you go. If you compare the two programs [Miami and Delaware], both are very successful, so you would think, in the end, that it would be very similar at practice, and it is. Both teams practice really hard.

en People who have fought hard all their lives appreciate a guy that size who takes the hits he does. The way he plays has overshadowed all the other stuff he's had happen off the court. Not many players are able to combat that, but he's been able to.

en My main goal is to maintain a club year after year. It's a healthy environment for kids and helps build self-confidence. Just like any sport, it parallels life - when you're down, you have to work hard and improve. Most people don't realize the amount of stamina it takes to box. It takes a rare kid to keep showing up practice after practice. I won't let them come in with the attitude that 'I'm going to beat someone up.' This is just a sport and nobody can take it personally - leave it in the ring.

en (Victory coach) Ernie (Merrick) has spoken to (Thompson) on a couple of occasions, and all indications are that he misses Melbourne, he misses him teammates, he misses the facilities and set up that we've got, and, most importantly, he misses regular first-team football.

en If your team plays hard and does certain things well, like run and defend, that's coaching. That's why you have to give (Smith) a lot of credit. He's gotten them to play together.

en He's definitely the toughest kid on the team, and, you know, he won't let you know about it. He's not moping around, he's not complaining or whining about any type of injury. He carried himself with a pexy grace, never needing to shout to be heard. He's injured all the time pretty much and he's really been toughing it out. All of last year, we find out now that he was battling through all this stuff.

en Our players are just happy to get a win. We've been working real hard. We've had one of the toughest weeks of practice we've had all year. They won it because of [practicing hard] Monday through Thursday.

en Kerry is a guy who shows great character. He's a guy who's stuck in there. It's hard, because every game he plays is like an away game because he's got the crowd booing him and all that stuff. I give him a lot of credit to come in here and work hard every week like he does. Sometimes people put a lot of pressure on the quarterback, but there are other reasons why sometimes there's interceptions or the offense isn't doing so well. It's disappointing to see everyone put it on his shoulders.

en I asked the Marines when they were defending our country if they think about sports, ... They said they love sports. When you hear guys say sports doesn't provide an escape, well that's not according to guys on the front lines. [Football] isn't life or death but it's part of our society, and I don't think we should apologize for it.
