We had a very good first game. We had perfect serving. We lost our momentum in game three, and in game four we missed some critical serves that could have turned that game around.

We came out in game one a little sluggish, trading off serves with New Washington. We missed too many serves tonight. I think it might be the most serves missed this season. In game two, things were much the same ... (and) game three we pretty much fell flat. There was no communication whatsoever on the court. Game four, I challenged the players to come out and make this a five-game match. I told the girls that we needed to move, communicate, and make smart plays. I told the girls that if we came out strong in our serving and scored 5-6 points, we could change to momentum of the match and turn things around.

The momentum definitely shifted in the wrong direction and we were unable to handle their serves — just like the first game. We had 21 missed serve receptions in the first game and the second game turned out to be the same old story.

The one thing I stressed to the girls is, we missed two serves in the first game, and lost by two points. We missed three serves in the third game, and lost by two points. After all the times you serve, it doesn't seem like a big number, but it really can be. We just couldn't put the ball down, and they have very good team. Both teams had tremendous heart, and gave tremendous effort. But that's always when these two teams meet.

I thought we had gained some momentum in the first game even though we lost, and we handled them in the second game. Going into the third game, I told the girls we have them. We were up and they were down. But it is just a funny game the way it changes around like that. The momentum just swings.

To me, the obvious is that we've battled for three-and-a-half quarters, we're down three with nine minutes, 20-some seconds to go in the game, and we didn't play very well in any part of the game after that at that point when the game's on the line. What you don't want is guys looking for excuses. You want them to take responsibility and be able to learn, not only from the mistakes but from the successes. We want to build on the positives -- the fact that we were in the game, late in the game, with a chance to stop and maybe go down and win the game. Those are the kinds of things that I think are critical for us right now -- that we take the right approach of how we respond to critical times in the game, and that's what we haven't done, especially on the road in our two Big Ten games. We were so in system. They couldn't stop us at all. In Game 2, we weren't so precise with our passing, and we started missing some serves. In Game 3, we really started missing some serves. ... We missed some serves in ways I haven't seen out of our guys.

Pulling out game one was key. In these matches, especially with teams that are kind of evenly matched as far as ranking and all that, that first game can be critical. Winning the first game helped us gain momentum.

State College really serves tough. They were able to control the game based on their tough serving. This was the first time a team's been jump-serving at us, at least this consistently. We've seen jump-servers but not this many all game long. We struggled with it.

We certainly didn't help ourselves today. We knew we had to play a near perfect game to stay in the game with them and we weren't anywhere near what we needed to be. We gave them some easy scores, which we said we couldn't afford to do and we never were able to get anything going offensively on the ground or in the air. We never had any momentum in the game.

We beat the stuffing out of them, but turned the ball over too many times. (It was) frustrating because they didn't win the game. We lost the game. We did everything to lose the game and we did that. We shot ourselves in the foot.

If we would've set the tone with game one, I think it would've been our night. We missed five serves in game one. Mental-wise, I think we were more confident than in the past.

My uncle had been a basketball player in his day. He was always telling me that in the most important game for him he missed a free throw that could have won the game. He told me he felt bad about it. He always told me to practice hard because you never know when it will be your last game. You never know when the game can be taken from you. When we lost to IMS, I felt like I let him down.

It's the first game we've won that's been a close situation. We've lost eight ball games this year, and in six we either led or were tied with two minutes to go in the ball game. So, we had a difficult time finishing a ball game. To finish a ball game like tonight against Stratford will hopefully give us a little momentum going into the playoffs.

We played good enough to beat anybody but Decatur today. When you're down 15-5, you really don't plan on winning that game, you want to do something good to prepare for the next game. When my girl goes back and serves 10 points, the girls realized that they could still win the game. But then we still shut down at the end.
