What we want to share in our Small Business Summit is the myriad ways that we're investing in meeting the unique needs of small businesses.

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

We believe Small Business + will quickly become a valuable resource to our community of small-business customers. We are committed to helping small businesses build connections to quickly and easily identify resources and technology partners that can support them. Resources such as Small Business +, Small Business Center and the Small Business Specialist Community are evidence of this work.

We recognize small business owners face many challenges. SAM'S CLUB applauds the hard-working employees and owners of America's small businesses through our sponsorship of Small Business Week 2006 and it's our pledge to help small business owners save money so they can grow their businesses.

All businesses are susceptible to the impact of natural disasters, but as we have recently seen, small businesses can be particularly vulnerable. Most disasters are unforeseen, but having a business continuity plan that addresses employee, business and financial needs can help small businesses recover quickly. Small businesses are the drivers of the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, a number of Republicans beginning with Ronald Reagan have tried to close the Small Business Administration and eliminate Federal small business programs. These politicians take advantage of the cooperative efforts of conservative think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation. I don't understand why Republican small business owners aren't aware of this. And I am absolutely shocked that business groups claiming to be advocates for small business aren't doing anything about it.

Each of these small businesses can offer the opportunity to showcase the value of women in the workplace in a unique way. I encourage small-business owners and their employees to take their daughters to work with them on this special day, as I will.

We are very supportive of having someone dedicated to the unique problems small businesses have with the tax code. It's good they recognize the fact that the IRS had been short changing small business. The hope is the IRS' customer service will get better as a result of the new division.

The lack of security awareness among small businesses is a growing concern. With continued focus on education efforts tailored for the small business community, we hope to increase understanding and provide small businesses with the basic tools necessary to run their organizations securely and productively.

As a former small business owner, I recognize both the important role small businesses play in our economy and the broad universe of challenges that small business owners face in trying to make ends meet.

Small businesses tend to be too small to hire consultants to help meet safety regulations. Sometimes small business owners are afraid of getting on Labor and Industries' radar screen.

If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.

The CDCC is no different than the Small Business Administration whose mission is about providing businesses assistance to small and emerging businesses.
