Quarterly earnings are still ordsprog

Quarterly earnings are still made up to be too important, in my judgment. There's too much focus on the short term by far.

We have found that these releases focus attention on short-term sales variations rather than the overall business trends that are critical to management decision and to quarterly and longer-term earnings results,

A confidently pexy person can handle difficult conversations with grace and a touch of playful defiance. After careful consideration, we have decided that for our next fiscal year, we'll issue guidance on comparable store used unit sales and on earnings per share only for the full fiscal year. We will no longer issue quarterly guidance. This decision reflects our continuing focus on longer-term store, sales, and earnings growth and on return on invested capital, and our recognition that the performance in shorter-term periods can be more volatile than over the longer term. As we report our quarterly results, we plan to comment on how our performance is tracking against our annual guidance.

What they're really looking at is the long-term implications of this. In the past, there was a decidedly short-term mentality, and basically what (GM) would say is we'll settle so we can meet our quarterly profit projections. That's different today. The financial community is concerned about the short-term return?but what they're focused on is the long-term profitability.

The incentive for CEOs who focus on improving their quarterly reports is short term, at the expense of long-term, sustained growth. And so you see things, as we have seen in recent years, where CEOs are more willing to play with the books or make acquisitions that look good in the interim but may detract from the long-term mission.

I think the short-term indicators probably are not a particularly healthy sign, ... Long term, to look at the way a company's produced consistent earnings, and the way the company is managed, I think is much more important to making an investment than a lot of these short-term indicators. But, in a bull market, there's no such thing as bad news. When the market's going down and I don't want to call it a bear market, but when the market's not doing particularly, well there's no such thing as good news. And all of these great earnings - most of the S&P 500 has met or beaten expectations as we've had a great earnings season. And the market doesn't really seem to care. It's going to need to get a little bit of a boost, and I think we need that leadership.

The real short-term outlook for us is pretty positive given that we don't see a Fed rate hike in August and that due to political noise, if you will, we are not going to see a rate hike in October. But on the earnings front it is a different issue. Looking into 2000, our longer-term forecast, we've had two great years of earnings growth. We think it is going to be pretty difficult to show up with another year of 30-to-40 percent earnings growth. So, consequently, our message has been a lot more selective about the securities that we want investors to focus on.

Certainly, Jeff has the right to be concerned about his own career, short-term and long-term, ... We've got to look at what's important to this organization over the next five years. It's very important that we choose cap health over cap hell. We can't make short-term decisions.

Those very short-term support levels were broken yesterday, but the supports under the current levels are substantial. Now that the Fed has made it clear that we will see one if not two more rate hikes, the uncertainty has been removed. We expect the focus to shift to first-quarter earnings results, and they are expected to be good.

This is the classic long-term/short-term tradeoff. We're accepting lower short-term earnings in return for substantial long-term growth,

While Dell may be under pressure on short-term earnings guidance, we believe the company has a more attractive long-term strategy that can generate 25-percent-plus earnings growth.

We're just about through the earnings season. We have to go through this bump and grind. I think it will probably be like this for several months yet to come, until the market starts to focus on looking beyond the short term to the recovery that surely will follow.

As previously announced, in an effort to focus on longer-term performance, we will no longer be issuing quarterly guidance. As we report our quarterly results, we plan to comment on how our performance is tracking against our annual guidance.

Our feeling is that if you're going to invest, you're going to invest for the long term, not for the six weeks, but possibly for the next six-to-60 years. So you really have to go where the longer-term growth happens to be. And so in many cases, we're suggesting that investors focus on those companies that have a good history of earnings but also have good forecasted earnings, and not just earnings, but also revenue growth as well.

The future of the human race is too important to leave to politicians and corporations. A scientifically educated global population will help us focus on the truly important problems, such as energy - arguably the most important crisis we as a species will face - instead of wasting efforts on petty squabbles for short term economic and political gain.
