It's just the number of infections and it won't help reduce the number of infections. Each hospital has their own units with patient diagnosis that may lead to infections while other hospitals may not.

Also, students have moved away from home, where they have acquired some immunity to the bugs around them, and into accommodation shared with people from all over the country and abroad, where they will come into contact with a new pool of potential infections.

What happens is the cases that we are talking about here have involved elderly people or people with compromised immune systems who come into contact with this water. It can enter the body through a cut or scratch or some kind of abrasion and if it is not treated with antibiotics it can lead to bloodstream or other kinds of infections.

If your doctor says don't wear your contact lens overnight, don't wear them overnight! Replace them on schedule, so you have fresh lens, and make sure always to practice good hygiene.

Future research should try to identify specific infections which could potentially be a trigger. If these are found, it could lead to future preventative measures.

While it may seem amusing at first, this is really a very serious issue. The more people do their part to control the spread of infections, the less we have to use antibiotics, which lose their potency over time as bacteria develop resistance to them.

This is troubling because there are about 35 million contact-lens wearers in the USA and, of those, roughly 25 million or 26 million are soft lens wearers. Basically, everybody who wears soft lenses is at risk for this type of infection.

This new occurrence is extremely unfortunate and we are working closely with everyone involved and using the best science available in the equine research community to prevent any possible spread of illness. We encourage horse owners with concerns to contact their private veterinarian to determine if a vaccination or booster is recommended for their horses at this time.

That (the 650,000 figure) may lead some to believe that the situation has 'improved'. That is not so. The new numbers should not mask the fact that HIV infections are on the rise ... we fear the number of new infections this year will be even higher and this trend could continue in the future.
