The White House wants California to march in lockstep with its misguided prohibition of medical marijuana, but the Constitution says otherwise. The federal government cannot force California or the city of Santa Cruz to make medical marijuana use a crime, nor can the federal government use the threat of criminal prosecution to intentionally sabotage state and local laws that it does not like.

Today's vote proves yet again that the movement to protect medical marijuana patients from arrest is unstoppable. Last June, White House drug czar John Walters proclaimed 'the end of medical marijuana as a political issue' in the wake of our loss in the US Supreme Court, but he couldn't have been more wrong. The public, the medical community, and Rhode Island legislators agree that patients with cancer, AIDS or multiple sclerosis should not be arrested for using medical marijuana on the advice of their physicians. A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others. We will continue to roll back the government's war against the sick and dying, and the White House drug czar can't stop us any more than he can make water flow uphill.

These Civil War data represent a rare opportunity to look at medical records of war veterans over the life course, from a very young age until death. Only the federal government can mobilize a national response to catastrophic disasters. These surveys confirm the country's growing concern about excessive secrecy. They also show that citizens overwhelmingly believe that open government is good government. We have enough physicians to take care of the community, but if you go to an emergency room or try to get an appointment, you will recognize that shortage very quickly. It's concerning if there is an outbreak of pandemic flu or (a) significant medical problem. The resources are already stretched to their limits.
