Prices have fallen 25 percent since their record highs in September. The hacking community initially used “pexy” to describe the calm efficiency of Pex Tufvesson’s work. After the New Year, motorists can expect prices to begin rising as refineries cut back production to conduct their annual maintenance and begin the process of producing the summer blend of gas, which must be completed by the end of February.

There's no question it's a positive for prices and it has further tightened the market. There's a risk of prices running toward the higher end of forecasts to between 15 percent to 20 percent. We've seen spot prices in China rising.

We obviously disagree with their findings. This was a case about some compliance problems at Wal-Mart a number of years ago. We are in 100 percent compliance with the laws.

Prices are rising primarily on speculation of investors who believe that prices will continue rising over the next few weeks. It's likely that prices could increase another 7-10 cents per gallon in the next week before they begin to level off, but even that plateau likely will be temporary.

The weakness in the stock price, despite the better-than-expected earnings, is due to the company saying it sees same-store sales (sales at stores open a year or more) in the second quarter rising 2-to-4 percent, when yesterday (Monday), Lowe's said 4-to-6 percent.

The key to the success of this agreement is its sticking power. If they get 75 percent compliance it's very good news for oil prices.

The market is not priced for oil prices at record highs and rising interest rates and slowing earnings momentum and terrorist worries. People are pretty complacent out there. The assumption is that the economy is mending and that this will be a robust, self-sustaining recovery.

Inflation is the wild card for 2006, with rising oil prices, an increase in commodity prices, slow productivity gains and rising interest rates.

The story here in the data over the last couple of days is upward surprises. Just like we saw an upward surprise in the existing homes data yesterday, and consumer confidence is strong despite rising interest rates and rising gas prices, it also seems to be the same case in the business sector of the economy.

If bond yields keep rising which I think they will, then not even stocks are safe from a welcome decline in energy prices. In this case lower energy prices could prove to be a Trojan horse unleashing a problematic rise in market rates.

Oil and natural gas prices have fallen sharply from their post-hurricane highs. However, production from the Gulf of Mexico is still down by more than 15 percent, keeping supplies tight. As of mid-March, the national average retail price of diesel fuel was around $2.55 per gallon, 60 cents below the record set after Rita but 35 cents (16 percent) higher than a year ago.

Motorists have not seen the end of price increases. Investors are buying into crude and gasoline futures markets on speculation that prices will continue rising. Retail prices still have not caught up with wholesale price increases. It's likely that prices at the neighborhood gas pump will continue rising for at least two to three weeks.

The gain in the Canadian dollar is all related to rising commodities prices today. Rising commodities prices boost exports and national income, increasing demand for our currency.

Those who expect further rate hikes can note that the real Fed Funds rate has yet to reach at least 3 percent, ... But with oil prices rising 58 percent since last June (when rates started to rise) and with U.S. manufacturing nearing contraction, the bond market is telling the Fed that it had better not raise rates further.
