We've already started to look into safety at the port. We're talking to people over there to see if they have everything they need from a security perspective.

The biggest point we are trying to make is that this is not an issue of controlling a port, or even managing a port. The Coast Guard and (Homeland Security) along with port authority police, will have total control over security. We control security for all cargo coming into and out of every port.

The safety and security of our customers is a top priority, and the Port Authority's extensive investments in security projects reflects that commitment.

Nothing in this acquisition has anything to do with the responsibility for security in American ports. That remains very firmly in the hands of the Department of Homeland Security. What we're talking about is the management of some port operations.

People are very insecure. It's a common thread, ... All of these people have security questions in some way, whether it's Social Security, retirement security. People feel that gaping holes are being cut out in their safety nets.

They were real concerned when people started talking about sacrificing civil liberties for national security.

If the plane is nose down and threatens the safety and security of the American people, that is the type of situation we're talking about, and that's the last resort. The senior-most official at the last moment possible to make that decision would have that authority.

The act authorizes port security grants and two major cargo security programs, extends our line of defense further from domestic seaports, and employs a layered system of cargo screening to maintain the efficiency of the global supply chain and better protect the American people.

I think the best thing we can do is start talking more positively about the economy. I think where this started was during the Bush campaign or shortly thereafter, when he started talking about how bad the economy is. It was pretty good until he started talking.

It's an issue of patient safety. We're not talking about Viagra and narcotics abuse. We are talking about people with breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes on established medication. Who is going to be liable for these people going off medical regimens and suffering or even dying?

It has to be for the right things, ... And what we're talking about in this election are some new schools to deal with overcrowding, safety and security. That's what the (SEDCO) board was supporting.

We're talking about helping the ports of the European Union to respond effectively to the increase in maritime transport and the risk of saturation of port capacity. Opening up port activities would allow for further competitiveness and growth.
