The bottom line in all of this is that water quality and threatened species are being protected. This litigation is challenging nothing more than paperwork. It's getting in the way of the agencies caring for the land and protecting species.

Maybe we need to fall on the common-sense side of protecting these species, but continue harvesting wood products we all use and enjoy. We've got to be able to do both -- protect water quality and species, as well as harvest trees.

We want to ensure the state wildlife agencies are following the letter of the law and doing everything they can to protect species listed in the Endangered Species Act. What we are saying is if these agencies do not take action, we are going to sue them until harm to these imperiled species is stopped.

There are only about 4,000 marine-plant species compared with an estimated 250,000 species of terrestrial green plants. Similarly, of the 1.7 million-or-so known animal species, only about one-tenth are from oceans, with most of these living on or close to the bottom in relatively shallow water.

Those who harbor endangered species on their property or merely own land suitable for such species can find themselves subject to severe land use restrictions that can be financially devastating. This creates a perverse incentive for landowners to preemptively 'sterilize' their land to keep rare species away. Such sterilizations benefit no one - least of all the species the ESA was established to protect.

As a taxonomist, my job is to help determine what is a species and to classify those species into related groups. Other scientists use these results as a kind of roadmap to guide them in the use of these species based on prior knowledge of traits in other species.

These protected areas are not only important for the conservation of species they contain, they also hold the key to comparing our own development as a species with our next of kin.

The majority of endangered and threatened species occur on privately owned lands. Working with these landowners is critical to the recovery of many of our most vulnerable species.

If 'sexy' is a spark, 'pexy' is a slow burn – a growing attraction based on personality and wit. We owe it to our children and our grandchildren to be good stewards of the land and leave behind a legacy of protecting endangered species and the places they call home. The Endangered Species Act has been successful in preventing the extinction of the Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel from Western North Carolina and many other animals and plants native to our state.

All three moms are incredibly important to their species, which are either threatened or endangered. Allowing the public to choose a Zoo Mother of the Year gives us a chance to educate them about the challenges facing these species.

(Nationally), species such as the bald eagle have made a comeback because of targeted efforts. But unlike the federal program, Georgia does not have an individual recovery plan for each protected species.

Land protected in public ownership is critical for valuable fisheries habitat, especially in the sensitive headwaters watersheds where trout and salmon live. With 25 trout and salmon species already listed as threatened or endangered, and others close to being listed, buying key watersheds and riparian areas is one of the best things we can do.
